Where the project is going is certainly more important in terms of research than what it can earn you. At least in the early stages.
Looking for the quick return is a path to failure since few of us can be right most of the time. Those seeking the quick hit often find their failures doom them.
Long term thinkers get hit too. However, if they are right on a couple then it more than makes up for the losses.
