Advancing discovery
Researchers validated the capabilities of XLuminA by demonstrating its ability to rediscover three foundational microscopy techniques independently.
Starting with simple optical configurations, the framework successfully replicated a system used for image magnification. It then tackled more advanced challenges, rediscovering Nobel Prize-winning STED (stimulated emission depletion) microscopy and a method utilizing optical vortices for super-resolution (SR).
Beyond replication, XLuminA showcased its potential for genuine discovery. When tasked with designing the optimal SR system using available optical elements, the framework developed a novel experimental blueprint. The design integrated the underlying principles of STED microscopy and the optical vortex method into a single configuration. Remarkably, the performance of this new design surpassed the individual capabilities of the original techniques.
