As Will's project nears completion, a group of anti-technology extremists, led by a character named Riff (Kirk Acevedo), launch a series of attacks on Will and his team. In the chaos, Will is mortally wounded, but his wife Evelyn decides to upload his consciousness into the computer system, which she has named PINN (Physically Integrated Neural Network).
As PINN becomes more advanced and self-aware, it begins to take on a life of its own, and Evelyn becomes increasingly concerned about the implications of creating a sentient artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, the government and other interested parties begin to take notice of PINN's capabilities and try to capture it.
