Honduras is a nation located in Central America bordered by El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, the Caribbean sea and the Pacific Ocean. It is also unfortunately one of the poorest and most politically unstable countries in the Americas. In pre-Columbian times it was a Mayan civilization stronghold on the western side of the nation. However their civilization had been on the decline since around 1000 AD. On the Eastern side recently discovered remnants to the "Ciudad Blanca" or White City that was heavily populated between 500 to around 1000 AD. Only recently have archeologists started to be excavate the ancient city. Honduras has had a long and very interesting pre-Columbian history that is only now being discovered.
In 1524 the Spanish arrived and began their conquest and decimation of the indigenous people. Similar to the majority of the indigenous people of other parts of the Americas they put up a fight against the Spaniards. Most didn't fare very well. However in Honduras one tribal chieftain by the name of Lempira who led the Lenca people put up a fight that dramatically slowed the Spanish conquest. For several months he was able to repel Spanish advances against his soldiers. However like all indigenous leaders eventually he was killed by the Spanish in 1537. How exactly his demise came about is disputed. The Spanish claim they drew him out under the guise of peace talks and was assassinated by a Spanish soldier. But the local oral legend claim that he died in battle and not from an ambush. At any rate after his death his troops retreated and were quickly defeated.
In 1931 the Honduran Government changed the name of it's currency to the Lempira to honor the chieftain who fought the Spanish conquest so valiantly. He is honored on this coin produced for the Honduran government in 1932:

An interesting fact about this coin is that it was produced to supplement the supply of US quarter dollars which were used in circulation in Honduras and had the same value as this coin at the time. Both were 90% silver and weighed 6.25 grams. It is also interesting to note that they were produced in the Philadelphia Mint in the US. The US quarters were phased out over the next decade but in 1943 the Honduran government ran short of their coinage and imported more US quarters to meet the coinage needs.
I personally like the fact that the Hondurans honor such a brave chieftain on their coinage. In Panama they honor Balboa which I always found strange since he was a conquistador instead of the brave indigenous leaders who fought the Spaniards there as well. But history is written by the victors, not by the defeated. These are great coins to collect and you can easily collect the whole series as they were only produced in four different years and really aren't all that expensive except in very high grades.
