I once heard that angel investors often look for a shitty office whenever they’re evaluating a business venture they are interested to invest in.
A shitty office is as important as the product that the startup business is planning to develop. In some cases, it may be even more important than the product itself.
So what does it mean by a shitty office and why do angel investors put a lot of importance to it?
What is Angel Investing?
Before we further proceed and talk about our main topic, let’s first level the ground and define what angel investing is.
In simplest terms, angel investing is a form of investing where you invest on a startup business who still plans on creating a product. You are investing on a product that is yet to be developed by a team who is yet to establish their name and reputation.
To fund their idea or venture, in making it into a successful business, this startups needed angel investors’ financial support in exchange for a portion of ownership in their business.
High Risk, High Reward
Investing does not guarantee a return. If you are new to investing, this may come as a surprise to you, but it is the reality of it. And angel investing is a type of investing that is even more risky.
As compared to established companies (e.g. Tesla, Apple) where we can check their track record, a startup business is yet to prove themselves.
Anything can go wrong before it can even see the light. Things like greed, mismanagement, jealousy, politics, laziness and inexperience can easily break a startup apart. If this happens, then you can say goodbye to whatever amount you have invested.
According to this post on forbes, 90 percent of startup business fail.
As we can see, in angel investing, we are investing NOT ONLY on the product but also on the individuals behind it.
The product is one thing, but the responsibility of making it happen comes from the persons behind it. They may have the best product but if there is a problem with the team, then the business is doomed to fail.
On the Brightside, this startup businesses would sell their shares for a low price to compensate for the risk. Once the business becomes successful, the value of their shares can increase significantly, the angel investors could then sell their shares for a large profit.
This is what makes angel investing high risk but it is also coupled with the potential of being rewarded significantly.
What Does it Mean by a Shitty Office?
The term “shitty office” stems from the logic where a person is occupied and dedicated to his/her work that he/she doesn’t have the time to make his/her office appealing.
More importantly, it means looking for unnecessary things that the business is not supposed to be spending their valuable time and funding. Things like luxury cars, parties, luxurious vacations, etc.
In short, a shitty office is the reflection of the commitment and dedication of the people in-charge in making their product and our investment a success.
Thus, as angel investors, we are not only investing on the product but also on the capability of the individuals behind it.
Angel Investing in Hive
The advent of blockchain and cryptocurrency made investing easier. It also made it more risky as anyone can easily declare to make a project without any planning or management experience. And to top it off, they can also be anonymous which can make it easier for them to just give up with the project or run away with our hard earned money.
The most popular type of product that we can invest in on a blockchain are play-to-earn games and cryptocurrency coins/tokens. In the case of play to earn games, investments can be made by buying their NFT game assets or governance coins or tokens.
Here on Hive, an excellent and most successful example of this play to earn game is Splinterlands. There are others more like Rising Star, Exode, dCity, Cryptobrewmaster, Ape Mining Club, dCrops and Rabona. Sorry if I missed to add your game on the list, it is not intentional. Feel free to add them in the comments below.
Let us not also forget that there are also games still under development. Buying in into this games still in development falls into the category of angel investing.
Here are some of the games that I know of that are currently being developed.
PsyberX
The most marketed and probably the most popular game being developed. A 3D first person shooter game that promises cutting edge graphics that is currently being developed under the Unreal game engine.
They already have started selling their NFT game assets and their LVL token is already available on hive-engine.

King of Duels, as the name suggests, is a Yugioh inspired game where you will battle with other players using monsters, spells and other means to reduce your opponents health to zero.
They already also released a playable beta version of their game.

Cryptoshots
A 3D First Person Shooter game that can be played directly in our internet browsers. It is still in development but they already managed to launch a beta version.

Ragnarok
Ragnarok is a strategy game based on chess featuring gods, titans and other supernatural beings.
Unlike the previous 3, they are not selling any game assets but have distributed them through airdrop. The airdrop is based on the amount of Hive and Hive Power that is in our wallet during the January 6, 2022 snapshot.

This is my first time encountering these terms on investing and I can say that I am also an angel investor since I invested a large amount of money on an NFT game, but it turns out that the developers are incompetent hahaha. I have no choice but to let it go :((
The first time I got into play-to-earn games was also not a pleasant one. It's hard to accept it but I also learned my lessons from it.
