The market gains would not exist without the liquidity

Actually this isn't true, if you held the asset you would realize the market gains as well. The liquidity gives you access to a portion of the trading fees and any potential incentive to the pool.

    We were talking from a macro perspective as opposed to the individual - if nobody provided liquidity, then the market gains would not exist.
