Europe is trying to repeat Airbus's success with satellite launches. Airbus itself, France's Thales, and Italy's Leonardo are joining forces to create a company to compete with Elon Musk's SpaceX. Since the Ariane rockets didn't perform too well, Europe hasn't had a proper alternative for launching its satellites.

For us Europeans, but especially for the Germans, just like with gas, it was very tempting to use the old Soyuz rockets, much cheaper and quite efficient, to launch their satellites. But all that changed, as we all know, with the war in Ukraine. And now that Russia is once again the great enemy, we can't use its services for that. So we threw ourselves into the arms of our American friend. But as we all know, our American friend is no fool, and since we have the only alternative, he demands that we meet his conditions. And of course, these aren't just economic.
So now it's up to us to make a virtue out of necessity and create our own service. Will it work? I don't know. There are good precedents and bad precedents, so it's hard to know. What is clear is that being independent comes at a cost, and we'll see if we can afford it.
Do you think it will be a competitive company? Or will SpaceX prevail?
