Reason Why Good Litter Is Important In poultry Farming

Litter material is very important in broiler production because it's serves multifunctional purposes. Litter is so much important in the poultry farming that it's can make or break poultry production depending on the best understanding of the farmers.

Some Purposes Litter Serves In Broiler Production Include:

Like I said earlier that your litter materials must be a good absorbent materials as it absorbs excess moisture from the droppings and drinkers of the birds, and also aid fast drying by increasing the surface area of the house floor;

Consequences of poor litter on your birds

Like I said earlier that litter must be a good absorbent materials but when litters started to withhold moisture, it tends to cluster together and become caked. And if proper measure is not taken, an increase of moisture content in the bird's pen will give rise to temperature increase which could leads to fermentation processes in the litter. Fermentation of wet litter give rise to emission of ammonia and when the ammonia levels is higher in poultry farm, it will affect the performance of the birds, limit birds feed intake and cause irritation and also wet litter can give rise to increase of pathogen and this can lead to high chance of disease outbreak.

It is very important to have good litter management practices and finding the right balance between ventilation and temperature is very important as it will help litter to maintain dryness and free of disease which leads to the birds reaching their potential growth in no time.
