Throughout the month of August, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts, with my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.

The Unicorn of Scotland 2017 UK Gold Proof Five-Ounce Coin

In August of 1561 Mary, Queen of Scots, came back to Scotland after spending thirteen years in France. Mary had ascended to the throne aged just six days old, so most of her reign had been carried out by regents in Scotland whilst she grew up in France.

She was eighteen at the time of her homecoming.

Mary, the only surviving legitimate child of King James V of Scotland, was six days old when her father died and she acceded to the throne. She spent most of her childhood in France while Scotland was ruled by regents, and in 1558, she married the Dauphin of France, Francis. Mary was queen consort of France from his accession in 1559 until his death in December 1560. Widowed, Mary returned to Scotland, arriving in Leith on 19 August 1561. Four years later, she married her half-cousin Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, and in June 1566 they had a son, James.

The unicorn is Scotland's national animal, signalling purity, innocence, masculinity, and power. These symbols of heraldry, myth and ancient legend date back over 1,000 years. This is the second release in the series and this edition has been struck in five ounces of 999.9 fine gold and finished to Proof standard. Struck in five ounces of 99.99% pure gold, the 2017 Queen’s Beasts Unicorn Proofs carry a legal-tender value of 500 pounds.

While the coin carries a "face value" of £500, it originally cost £9,995. Not only are you paying thenprice of gold, but with just 75 coins minted, the scarcity of this coin means the premiums will only ever increase. These coins vary rarely come on to the second hand market, but when they do they get snapped up very quickly, even though they cost a small fortune.
