A coin for every occasion: 19th October 2019 - The day "Dippy" came to town

in LeoFinance3 years ago

Throughout the month of October, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts, with my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.

On 19 October 2019, Cardiff residents gained a historic new neighbour when the Natural History Museum’s iconic Diplodocus dinosaur skeleton joined the National Museum Cardiff.

All 292 bones made the trip, with Dippy standing an astonishing 21.3 metres long, 4.3 metres wide and 4.25 metres high

When a celeb such as Dippy comes to town, you make the effort the to go see it. Its not till youre standing next to these types of things, do you realise the actual size and scale of these ancient creatures. So we visited Dippy when he first arrived in Cardiff, whilst Mrs W was heavily pregnant with 1/4pint.

Some 65 milliom years in the making, these beautifully designed silver coins were part of the Royal Mints DINOSAURIA range released in 2020.

Made from 0.925 (sterling) silver, and weighing 8g these coloured coins were a great hit with kids and mummy and daddy's wallets. The first 3 of 6 cois are still available at the mint, so it doesnt look like tjese coins were that much of angreat success. Thankfully, i didnt take the plunge and splurge the £67.50 per coin the mint were asking.

A quick search on Ebay shows these coins habe crashed in value on the second hand market. With "sold" prices some 50% cheaper than original price, should anyone like themlook of these coims, thats where id be buying from at the moment.
