Dogecoin, the world’s most famous memecoin, has come a long way from its humble beginnings as an internet joke. Before becoming the first memecoin ETF (exchange-traded fund), Dogecoin had already built a strong legacy in the crypto community.

How Dogecoin Started

Dogecoin was created in late 2013 by software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a lighthearted parody of Bitcoin. They launched an official website featuring the iconic Shiba Inu dog from a popular meme. The dog, named Kabosu, was adopted in 2008 by a Japanese kindergarten teacher, Atsuko Sato, from an animal shelter — unknowingly becoming the face of one of the most beloved cryptocurrencies in the world.

Dogecoin’s Rise to Popularity

What began as a fun experiment quickly turned into a massive online movement. Thanks to its friendly branding and meme culture, Dogecoin gained huge traction on Reddit, where users began tipping each other with DOGE as a form of appreciation. Within the first 30 days of launch, the Dogecoin community surpassed one million users.

In 2021, Dogecoin hit an all-time high (ATH) of US$0.7376, reaching a market capitalization of US$39 billion. This milestone officially crowned Dogecoin as the largest memecoin in the world, outpacing other popular tokens in the same category.

Dogecoin ETF Officially Launches

Building on its momentum, REX-Osprey recently launched the Dogecoin ETF (DOJE) in the United States. It officially began trading on the Cboe BZX exchange on Thursday, September 19, and within the first hour, the fund recorded a trading volume of nearly US$6 million. This makes Dogecoin the first memecoin to have an ETF, marking another major step for crypto mainstream adoption.

A Strong and Supportive Community

Despite starting as a joke, Dogecoin has evolved into one of the most active and welcoming crypto communities in the world. Since its early days, the Dogecoin community has been known for supporting charity projects, fundraising campaigns, and social good initiatives — all powered by the slogan “Do Good Everyday.”
