During my days of being active in Church, one thing that constantly stuck was the idea that we're all meant to "suffer now to enjoy later". This was gotten from the preaching about Jesus on the cross of Calvary.
The idea was that we should be able to endure any harsh situation like Christ did because at the end of our trial is joy. I liked the idea of it, like a lot of Nigerians did, because it justified our daily lives.

We calculate our lives based on how well and how long we can handle suffering. I don't think it's a bad thing, however, I don't always believe there is joy or a light at the end of the tunnel.
For some, they experience this joy, for others, they don't. A lot of people focus a lot on suffering that the light at the end of the tunnel is just a phrase they use each morning to get out of bed. It's a mirage.
A while ago, I was constantly broke even though I had my crypto. I refused to touch anything because I believed that soon enough everything that looks like nothing will miraculously become important.
I was letting myself suffer because of this "light at the end of the tunnel" that I was trying to create. It only took a few words from my brother to get me to calm down a little and enjoy life. Because, why not?
While I value the money I earn here, I know I have no other source of income at the moment so who am I kidding? I need to spend a little bit on myself every now and then.
So, I spent on myself and I have no regrets. I value everything I got for myself because I know how it came and what I went through to get it. I also didn't spend everything, just enough to keep my head above water.
Oftentimes, we delay gratification so much that we forget to live. In a quest to live a better life in the future, we forget to live a good life now. There's no joy, no satisfaction or taste of what we work for, just one trial to the next.
What if you die haven never lived? Death can come at any time and for anyone. What if you never get to enjoy all you work so hard for? When you think about that, it should make you want to spend a little bit extra on yourself.
I tightened up my spending a little bit lately because I don't have a lot coming in anymore but I still do the best I can to make sure I don't lack anything. It's the best I can do for myself at this point.
How about you? Do you overthink your existence and forget that you're living right now? How often do you just say "fuck it" and get yourself something you really want?

In the long run, delaying your gratification usually gives you more chances at success, whatever your definition of it may be. But life isn't about min-maxing everything, and sometimes you also realize that whatever optimizations you make to your life can be destroyed in just a moment. I'm learning to not sweat the small stuff and just indulge myself whenever reasonable. 🙂
Indulging yourself whenever you can give you a lot of peace and can help you focus a lot better.

This is a very important topic - choosing the right position between two extremes.. It has always been difficult for me to find it in all spheres of my life. The so-called "golden mean"..
When I made my plans for the future for a long time, they did not come true, and when I lived only for today, tomorrow would come and brazenly declare its existence.
But I think you were able to figure it out and catch the essence) And I'm happy for you)
I can't say I've figured it out, I'm just living everyday and hoping I've made right decisions.

I am a big believer in striking a balance especially since I've dealt with a loss so close to home. I believe in the hustle and play now mentality because tomorrow is uncertain.
Yes, God's plans for us are good and not evil, to bring us to an expected end. But what if, God's plan for our lives is 30years on earth or even 20years on earth and we are called back to our heavenly home or as the case may be?
We really don't think about it. Not everyone would have a long life and that does not mean, God hates us. We are sent to earth on a journey to fulfill a purpose for a certain time and once that time is up, we are called back.
In summary, I live each day like it's my last. I save and invest but also actually live and if that means sleeping my ass off, helping a stranger in dire need, or even splurging on something I can comfortably afford, I do it with my full chest!
I like this part.
Sometimes it comes with a lot of guilt because the statement "we don't know what the future holds" can either be positive or negative. However, we can't come and kill ourselves right now even though we have a bright future.

I try to get out of this a lot of time and do some spending on my self, friends and family a lot of times.
I don't want to waste what I think I am saving..
Like Jesus said.. Those who save their souls and lost it eventually.. Lol.
Matthew 16:25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
Life here may not only mean money..lol
Imagine saving for a very long time and losing everything to a cyber thief. Saving so much and not even enjoying yourself, then one Simon Leviev will be using your hard earned labour to be living large.

interesting read! thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I am not sure if I delay gratification, or not... sometimes, with chocolate, sometimes not.
But, I do tend for the most part, to follow the mantra, it is what it is and live in the moment. Not future, and definitely NOT the past.
I found this post via #PYPT on @dreemport
it is what it isThanks for stopping by @bluefinstudios. I think sometimes we unconsciously delay gratificationn, even with very little things. But yeah
