Series 40 (BJ40) is better known as Hardtop, especially in Indonesia. This name is because the roof (top) of the car is indeed hard. Currently, the Hardtop is one of the most popular classic cars. Moreover, this car has a long history.

Included in the Series 40 lineup are the short wheelbase BJ40, medium wheelbase BJ43 and long wheelbase BJ45. BJ43 is produced with 2 variations, namely hardtop and softtop, while the FJ45V is produced with van and pickup variations. The last variant is specially produced for export.

In 1967, market demand increased rapidly. The BJ45V was replaced with the BJ55V which has a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. In the previous year, the Land Cruiser was generally the best-selling Toyota car in the United States. While a year later, the Land Cruiser recorded sales of 100 thousand units worldwide.

In 1974, there was quite an important change in the history of this Hardtop. Because, in that year Toyota offered a 3.0-liter diesel engine. This new engine makes Land Crusier sales increase sharply in Japan due to lower taxes compared to the 3.9-liter engine.
