Yes its a very ugly truth.
I think the problem that allows this to continue is that people do not want to know. If they acknowledged the truth to themselves they would feel that should do something about it and then others may see and treat them differently.
I wonder how the information can be delivered in such a way as to avoid that trap. Any ideas ?
