This, for me, has got to be one of the most depressing things I've ever witnessed

I think that's true for the majority of people, just not in the same meaning as implied by yourself. It depresses me and to be honest I am more of a loner so being by myself is not unusual, I guess there's a benefit in that regard as I've already adapted to own environment mainly. On the other hand I have college houses on my block...can you imagine being young and confined, whoa back in the day I'd had a hard time with that one, talking about depressing.
