Bums!

IMG_20230611_185700225 (1).jpg

If there’s one thing that galls me more than anything else it’s disrespect and not keeping your word...or is that two things? Anyway, what happened today made me hopping mad.

The local animal sanctuary rescue ex-battery hens from slaughter and rehome them, delivering them to towns all over Ireland. You reserve your chucks and the sanctuary delivers them to your local town. I had 10 booked but ended up with 16 when some ignorant, irresponsible, hard-hearted cretins booked chickens and didn’t turn up to collect them. We were the last town on the route meaning that having been driven around all day in a hot van, 19 little ladies had to be taken back to the sanctuary which is already overcrowded. To save the poor creatures this fate, those of us who did arrive divided up the remaining hens between us so that none was left behind.

I cannot understand the mind of a person who would do this, knowing that the entire scheme is run by volunteers who willingly give their time to save the lives of these birds only to have their generosity thrown in their faces by people I would gladly consign to some dirty dungeon to live out their lives on bread and water incessantly pecked by chickens. What ever happened to do unto others as you would be done unto?

If you find bare bums offensive, please turn back now!

My father taught me many things, most of which he did not practice himself, but one which has guided me through my long life in dealing with others is to try to leave people better off for having known you and if you can’t, at least don’t leave them worse off. If you can help someone, do it! If you can’t just leave them the hell alone.

What I admire most in others is generosity and I’m not talking just money, but that as well. Believe it or not, I was a girl guide in my distant past. I lasted 2 weeks but nonetheless. One of the guide's principles was 'to give and not to count the cost' and this I have found a worthy maxim to live by. A few years ago I found myself in a financial jam, needed 30,000 euro short-term but immediately, and couldn't borrow from a bank. I'd never borrowed a penny from anyone in my life but a friend offered me the money with no strings, no written agreement, no interest, nothing, saying that I had always given unreservedly and she was glad of the opportunity to reciprocate.

And that is what I love about human nature.

The images are of the chickens I rescued today. Please excuse the formatting, I did my best but I'm knackered chicken-keeping.

Sort:

incessantly pecked by chickens.

A little Dantean 😁, but appropriate

I lot of us will wonder when it's all over, how much did we do that wasn't self-serving? Something that wasn't for family or those we love.

You won't have to ask that question. Love the chickens.

I think that there's a special place in hell reserved for the thoughtless and the heartless.
Chicken-keeping does border slightly on the self-serving however tending to the needs of rodents demonstrates true altruism and nobility:)

Thank you, Rob @pibara - yes, it is certainly a high-quality post. 😇

We used to raise chickens, and they sometimes pecked each others' feathers off. Chickens are funny, and they are also very strange sometimes.

I've been keeping them for 3 years now and there's nothing as rewarding. As you say, they're funny little things and it's wonderful to watch them grow from bare, pitiful little scraps to bouffant little madams.

I wasn't put off in the least bit since we've got a poultry farm back home and I get to see hens like these all the time. Although in my case, it's their sisters that do this to them.
But that's besides the point, it must have been quite maddening for you to speak about like this. It's sad that people don't show the least bit of appreciation for the things people do out of sheer willingness. Hope the hens are okay.

The hens will be grand thanks. After proper care for a few months, they'll look like this.

They only attack each other when kept in overcrowded conditions. Mine might peck each other on the head occasionally but they're generally happy and contented.

That's how it should be. Have a wonderful week.✨

Yep...and worse.

I agree with everything in this post, people really can be assholes. Thanks for this post, and for your thoughts on this matter. Human beings have the ability for such greatness but much of the time fail to work towards it. Sad really.

Happily, most are benevolent, but there are always the few who spoil it for the rest.

Driving a load of birds around with sore holes. You are one step away from being Tipperary' s first ever pimp. 🤣 🤣.Let me know when you do get that that stage. untitled.gif

Oh you are awful...but I like you:)

These pics make me somewhat sad but you have done great.

I also love to read about that story of your friend.
That is what real friendship is all about.

Big hug 🐔 ❤️

Be happy they have a new home and will live happily ever after, treated with the loving kindness they deserve.
No man is a failure who has friends:)

Interwsting

I do my best not to bore!:)

We are capable of caring as a kind of currency, but some of us elect not to use those abilities. Thanks goodness for those of us who do!

Congrats on the new family members! (looks to me like they might have worms)

Worms? Why?

Those bare butts. I had this problem with mine a few years back. It would not surprise me at all given where they came from, but I'm no chicken expert.

Coming from factory farms the chickens are well wormed. They're kept in overcrowded conditions which is why they peck each other's feathers off. They're now in a 30 foot by 20 foot shed, just 26 of them so they'll be bouffant little ladies in no time!

Lavish conditions! Nice! Yeah they may have been dewormed regularly.

I would have been mad as well. It is great though that you and other divided up the birds and gave them a home. Some people are so engrossed in themselves that they do not think. Thank goodness for the ones that do - otherwise things would be quite dismal.
Aww so you were a girl guide as well - me too - for a short time. You were certainly living up to the promise.

Thank goodness there's more of 'us' than there are of 'them'!
