In English: Don't surrender while you've life left in you

I reckon if I came upon someone being assaulted, I’d wade in fists flying. I practised Karate in my youth and had several boxing lessons, like Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee rolled into one. I also have something of a heroic history. In the past, I've tackled burglars and robbers, and once, when I lived next door to a credit union and heard strange banging and drilling noises in the wee small hours, I prevented them from being burgled by hammering on the front door and shouting that I’d called the Garda. The following week, my house was burglarised while I was at work, but alas, nobody came to save me.

I’m pretty gung ho about most things, and as my regular readers will know, I completely changed my life five years ago when I decamped to the countryside and swapped city slicking for horticulture, producing the bulk of my own food. I once believed the country to be a place full of insects and smelly animals, a refuge for those unfortunates who couldn’t afford to live in the city. Have I changed my mind after 5 years of seeing how the other half live? Well partially. I love certain aspects of country life, such as having no neighbours to spy on you while you burn your rubbish in contravention of byelaws or erect a log cabin and two enormous sheds without permission. But I miss the bustle of the city and the encounters with other humans. Here we can go from one end of the week to the other without seeing another living soul. All things considered though, anticipating war, food shortages and possibly climate//pandemic lockdowns, I think country life is preferable.

And then there’s keeping chickens, something I enjoy enormously. I could live on eggs and have done so for long periods. Indeed, if I had to eat one food for the rest of my life, it’d be eggs. I mean, they’re so versatile. I’d happily eat them for every meal whilst playing one Smiths song on repeat on the cassette player of the only car I ever owned, a 1970s automatic left-hand drive Ford Capri with a red leather interior. A thing of beauty...something like myself!

Posted in response to galenkp's weekend experience prompt asking 'Would you assist someone being assaulted in the street or look the other way and walk past?/ City living or country living, which is your preference and why?/ If you could only drive one car, eat one food, and listen to one song for the rest of your life which would each thing you choose be and why?

The images are my own, taken on the streets of Dublin and most definitely reflect my views.

Sort:

I am not surprised you would leap to the aid of someone who was being assaulted. I also would. Though probably, as a coward, I would protect myself as much as possible.

I remember passing by a parking lot (in my car). I saw a man throw a woman to the ground. He was about to kick her. I skidded into the parking lot. Opened my door and stood just outside the car.

"Leave her alone!" I yelled. Not very brave of me, perhaps, but he actually hesitated. He still wanted to kick her!!! Then he stopped. She slowly got up and walked away. These were neighbors. She was his wife. Ever after we both pretended this never happened.

I think nature gave me a little too much adrenaline :))

I'm not surprised you intervened. Perhaps not these days, but I think in the past the first reaction of most would be to go to the aid of someone being attacked. Many years ago, a friend of mine, a very hefty chap, ended up with a broken jaw. when he went to help a guy being set upon by 2 others. Fools rush in and all that!

he went to help a guy being set upon by 2 others

That's courage!! I might stand at a distance and say, "Stop that!"😂

Thank you very much, @topcomment and friendlymoose 🦋

I remember a time when you actually did eat only eggs, and recently, for six weeks or so. I could never do that. I don't even like eggs unless they are served over easy with some kind of toasted and heavily buttered bread.

I am astonished at what you've gotten going on in on your country estate in a mere five years.

Great post, as always.

I'd forgotten about my recent egg diet. Damned Andy Kaufman! He said it would banish the malevolent forces inhabiting my brother, but even after 8 weeks of eggs and bottles of turpentine, the bugger is just as possessed as ever!
Maybe we have done a lot in 5 years. Covid closed my business down so I had nothing to do but put all of my energy into setting up my homestead.

He said it would banish the malevolent forces inhabiting my brother,

A bit of hyperbole on your part, wouldn't you say? I'm sorry it didn't help your brother much, although I think you did tell me it helped some, with his abdominal tire if I remember right. And you felt better. Andy definitely helped me wake up to my drinking problem (I paid the big bucks for one hour of his time), but no effing way I am shooting coffee up my wazoo or drinking turpentine. Why not just do blood letting, or emetics? He's taking medicine back to the 18th century, with harmful heroic measures. I could be as self-righteous as he is, I have to admit, now that homeopathy has taken over my life. Andy does not know what homeopathy even is, or at least he didn't when I spoke to him a year ago.

Have you seen Andy's most recent video? Judging by the first 40 seconds, I'd say he's gone stark raving mad. That said, I like the interview with Peggy Hall. I haven't heard anything from her since I left facebook at the start of the covid con.

If you hadn't said that you have only been there five years, I would have continued to believe you'd been prepping for fifty.

Hahaha, I love a spot of hyperbole, but everyone who meets my brother thinks he's possessed by demons. Yes, he did lose the imaginary fat but he says it's come back, though the weighing scales says he's only 65 kilos.

Do you mean Andy's intro makes him look crazy? He is a little too fond of himself alright. I must say though that he's had great success growing his hair. He could double as Rapunzel:)

I'm really enjoying the Homeopathy too and must thank you for steering me to just the right course. If I can just find some more time somewhere.

Oh! What course are you taking? I am so sold on this medical paradigm. It makes sense, and the more I learn, the more sense it makes.

I've enrolled in Gateway 1 &2. I agree, it's fascinating and makes a lot of sense to me too.

Of course I now see disease everywhere I go. Especially in myself. I used to go around telling people I had no known diseases, but it turns out I just didn't know the conditions I had were diseases! I'm teeming with illness now! And this is actually good news!

I still go around telling people I have no known diseases!:)

He is a little too fond of himself alright.

"You can call me the Truth Doctor." !!!?

If a man says to me "trust me" I respond "I never trust a man who says 'trust me,'"

His demeanor turns me right off, I want to run the other way. He's selling a kind of snake oil, developed by a mind that exists firmly in the conventional medical paradigm. His method is allopathy too.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. I think he's correct on creating a healthy body by detoxing and nourishing. What do you reckon to Jeff's Tesla machine?

I know nothing about it. I have a question: do you have to continue using it, or does it cure a disease for good, or for a good while. For instance, if using it for arthritis, is the effect long lasting, or must you use it often.

Detox is one thing. Obsession with detoxing, and living as if you have to do it every day (coffee enemas) is an illness.

This topic (city/country) was for you and you didn't disappoint, I knew you would not.

I'd like to go a few rounds with you, I've never fought a cross between Bruce Lee Mohammad Ali so it'd be fun I think. If you kick my ass that's ok, I'll just put it down to experience.

Lastly, I like people who take a stand and rise up when the need calls for it, so few would these days and it sickens me, like most things where people are concerned I guess.

A topic for me? Aw, that's just sooooo sweet. I reckon I'd go easy on you if we went a few rounds:)
I too respect those who take a stand. I have no time for wimps!

Just best me up a little bit huh? Thank you. I'm pretty hard to kill though, no one has managed it yet so don't be too soft on me.

I'd never harm a hair on your head sweetie. Sure aren't you my muse:)

All of my hairs are grateful. 😉

I loved reading this, and it doesn't surprise me any. If I had to pick another girl to share backs with in a fight it would be you 😂. Nothing better than eggs, boiled, fried in butter, topped with cheese...bring 'em on 😋

Ah shucks, thanks. Right back at ya...you're an ex-soldier aren't you? I could hold your coat while you get stuck in:)

Yep, we would defeat all foes 😂....or at least, make them cry a little hahaaa

You seem like a capable and headstrong woman which has probably helped you make the switch from city to country. I wonder though, you mention that you miss people but other than that what would you say was the hardest transition you had to make and why?

The hardest transition? That'd be having to cook. I'd never cooked anything in my life except porridge and eggs. Now there was no cafe right downstairs where I could grab something to eat. I'm almost a Michelin Star chef now!:)

Necessity is good motivation, is it not? :)

Chickens are preferibile than a lot of humans tough

I'd certainly agree and in many cases, a lot more intelligent:)

Lovely story telling, very entertaining, you are amazing, and Ohh yes eggs eggs eggs, I eat 3 eggs a day! Nutritious. One day I will have chickens too! 🥚🥚🥚

Three eggs a day? I eat two! It's no wonder we're such paragons of creativity and talent!

There are many people who like to eat eggs and eat them continuously for days and months, but some people do not like them at all and do not even eat them for breakfast. You have told an interesting story.

If I were king I'd make egg consumption compulsory!:)
