If success is defined in terms of wealth accumulation, I've been a dismal failure. I've had huge success in business, but providing a premium service at a reasonable price is terrible business practice. I built the largest legal agency in Ireland and ran 14 holiday apartments with 100% occupancy that were number 1 on Trip Advisor, but having the happiest employees on the planet and every customer a satisfied one was always more important than filling the coffers. I wish I could've been be as good at chasing money as I was at chasing perfection.
As to you falling short of true success, as we say affectionately here in God's country 'Ah feck off!'
