WHITE WEDDING - A BORROWED TRADITION

in Weekend Experiences7 months ago

In Nigeria, especially during the dry season, every weekend is for white wedding in one area or the other.
This is mostly practice among the Christian homes in Nigeria. After traditional marriage, the next thing is the white wedding conducted in the church.
The intending couples will invite friends and relatives, throw party and adorn on white wedding attire.
Children will be chosen as little bride and groom.

The children will join the queue and match with the intending couple.
Let pause at this juncture and think, when was this, part of our marriage tradition in Nigeria and Africa at large. Or is this how our forefathers use to get married?
If not so then how comes about the white wedding?

The white wedding becomes part of the African and Nigerian marriage tradition since the coming of Christian missionary.

The missionaries came with their tradition (white wedding) and influence our traditional marriage and made it a new marriage tradition to the Christian homes such that after paying dowry to the bride parents must go to the church for white wedding ceremony.

So it could be deduced that, white wedding is a borrow marriage tradition to the blacks (African).
It came with the coming of the white missionaries.

I won't fail to share with you that last weekend wedding was commendable one between Pastor Sunday Linus and Sister Glory Emem at Christian Fellowship Evangelical Nigeria inc., Akwa Ibom State.
