Hi weekend lovers! How is it going? I hope everything goes according to what we expect! I have just completed a community service program in one of the villages on the island of South Sulawesi, more precisely in Bukit Harapan Village, Gantarang District, Bulukumba Regency. This program is one of the graduation requirements on my campus, so we have to take it seriously. I’m really excited and grateful that the whole coursework we did all went smoothly without any obstacles while running it. One of our coursework was to make a map of the work area, we proposed the idea because our focus was social forestry, so we agreed to make a map of the area for the forest farmer group as one of the requirements for its administration.

The steps that must be taken before making a map are observing and surveying the boundaries of the area in their work area. Technically, we will travel within the forest area to take coordinate points at each boundary marker located in the work area of the forest farmer group for which we will make a map.

There were 15 of us from the same campus. The trip started on the weekend, we all gathered at the post and talked about the implementation procedures and discussed what items would be important for taking coordinate point data. We also brought provisions such as bread and mineral water to be consumed if any member was tired during the trip. We’re escorted by the head of the forest farmer group and some of his members.

The trip time from the post to the entry point of the forest area is about 15 minutes. We immediately took the first coordinates using the timestamp application. To minimize the time of taking coordinates, we decided to divide the number of members into 3 teams with different trip routes. My team consisted of 7 people while the other 2 teams only consisted of 4 people.

After finishing to take coordinates at one boundary marker, we moved on to look for other markers. We were guided by the head of the forest farmer group through the forest area and held on to his mandate to always walk together without leaving members behind. One of the restrictions he emphasized to us was that spitting and loud shouting were prohibited. It has become a tradition for Bukit Harapan villagers not to violate these taboos because they are related to sacred traditions.

The terrain was unpredictable, we had to climb uphill on a sloping surface and we also had to pass a small rocky river. Fortunately, the river was not deep but only shallow so we were able to clean our muddy feet from the bad ground.

While in the forest area, the road we walked on wasn’t always worthy of the normal road as usual, sometimes we had to pass through dense wild plants to get to the boundary marker quickly. Some of the dense wild plants had thorny stems, so we had to endure pain to get through them.

After walking through the forest area for about 30 minutes, we decided to take a short break in a rather open area to recharge our batteries before continuing our journey. We ate the food we brought while chatting with the head of the forest farmer group about the state of the forest area.

Based on our observations, some of the boundary markers have disappeared from their starting points, according to the head of the forest farmer group, this is due to the actions of nosy people. The picture above is the last one and there should have been stakes stuck there. Fortunately, the head of the farmer group still remembers the exact location so we were able to collect data on the coordinates. After that was all done, we decided to get to the top of Bangkeng Buki mountain to rest and capture our moment together.

One of the beauties offered from the top of this mountain is that there are several properties made by the community as photo spots, such as the picture above, there is a balcony that faces the outside view so that visitors can see the beauty of Bukit Harapan village.

We were very grateful to be able to capture a group photo before ending our trip this weekend. From this coursework we were able to learn more about the forest area and the importance of togetherness in various circumstances.
