When you have been with a person for a long time they become a part of you. Whether it is in the literal sense, where you see each other when you wake up and excited to see them when you get home, or in the emotional/spiritual sense. So when they leave for work, or some other reason, there is a hole left. I do hope it is just for a few days, so you don't miss him to much.
The way you beside you write this, I wonder if you're one such person, someone who has that special person beside you; that's how it reads anyway.
