We don't drink much, these days. My adrenal glands stress out just thinking about it. But sometimes I get a run of good health that coincides with holidays and we find ourselves having a bottle of wine every night, until we have a little bit too much and then swear off it again, not touching it again for months. We are all or nothing drunks. I both like drinking and hate it.
Still, at the end of a long day renovating a house, there's something about sitting on the back deck in the sunshine and using wine to ease the aching muscles.
It started when we bought the place and got the keys a month ago. The owners had left us a bottle of wine and a card. Probably the least they could do for the money we paid. They should have left us a crate. Later they'd have the cheek to ask for the vintage lights in the hallway back and I said get fucked look on Facebook Marketplace and you can buy them we'd be using them. Mind you I may have been happy to hand them over for a crate of wine.
Because the thing is, we're broke. We have a mortgage we can barely pay for, and the old house hasn't sold yet. I'm starting to freak out. In ten weeks Jamie won't even have an income. So I'm tightening the belt as tight as it can tighten and selling a few things off and hoping like hell the house sells. Truth be told, I'm a little depressed and anxious about the whole thing. It's why I haven't been on Hive much.
So, if you gave me a tenner, I'd probably buy a bottle of wine or two. I couldn't afford fish and chips or pay the electricity bill or the car registration so I may as well get drunk and forget about it.
And here, you can buy 2 - 3 bottles of wine from Aldi for a tenner. I used to go for $20 bottles of wine as I figured that was going to get you something good. How the mighty have fallen. But truth be told, Aldi does a good wine. This one is about $5 or $6 and there's a good red I used to use for cooking for $3.28 until I was so destitute that we tried it and realised it was pretty good and didn't give us a hangover.
Anyway, it's the end of the holidays and Jamie starts work again tomorrow so we'll not be drinking at all again til the summer. It'll save us a penny anyway.

I can relate! Sometimes a simple glass of wine feels like a small luxury in a busy life.
Yeah, a point where you can just stop and do nothing for a bit. Still, I can't keep going on it - it's only for a short time and then we get healthy again!
Keep your head up, things will work out sure enough. Someone will come along and buy your old place soon. We went through the same thing a few years ago when we moved. It ook months to selel our old house, but when we did, we made a decent chhunk on it. Until then, keep a couple bottles of the wine around :-)
Thanks so much. I really do need an encouraging and hopeful pep talk. Appreciated so much.
I have the same drinking glasses at home! I think we got ours from an opshop. I didn't buy any of my drinking stuff new. Except mugs... but I digress.
Sorry to hear about the stress. Maybe that light will be symbolically sold?
I do hope that things start to level out before long - we had to do the "two mortgage" dance for a while as the buyer of our old place wanted a long settlement, but I also didn't want to pay advertising fees to risk getting less than what we ultimately did.
We got through it, but we had and date.
Wine is nice. I'm missing it, but I will cherish my healthy liver as I drink copious amounts of water.
Ours came from the oppy as well. They're solid ! I did buy wine tumblers from Ikea last week.
Good on you for being good to your liver. You are sticking to your guns. Perhaps that's why I'm depressed -- I'm on a wine come down.
Thanks - I'm really hating the mortgage - and I dont know how we'll pay it if we dont sell soon. We've had two offers but they aren't enough. Cheeky, even. Well under the very reasonable asking price.
Jamie's not worried at all but he has no concept of where the money comes from or where it goes. HE just spends it.
I made a tool for that but you may want to employ a different type of tool.
Hahaha very funny! Once he had a girlfriend who whacked him on the head with a frying pan. She sure knew how to shut him up. I just can't bring myself to blame her.
Was it a Teflon pan? non stick.
stop talking to me, i need to make dinner
Go make dinner!
I had a similar situation when I bought a new car (although the difference was much smaller), until I sold the old one.
Soon there will be a buyer for your old house, have faith and hope...
Good idea to buy cheaper vine, I do the same.
I'm not a wine expert. So if the bottle costs tens of dollars, this $5 one gets the job done 🙂
Exactly, if you're not a wine snob and it doesn't taste like vinegar, a fiver is super. Thanks for the support x

Oh yes. Best beer I've ever had (not a big beer person tbh) was after a long day repainting the house. You're selling a gorgeous house, so I do believe it will attract buyers soon. Hopefully. Fingers crossed.
As for the wine, there's back-and-forth imo. You can get some damn fine wines under $10, if you know what you're buying. So while I tend to apply the expensive is better logic especially while traveling and looking through the local options, at home, I'm not bothered my wine's $7. It's good wine, or at least good to me.
I hope all this stress goes away soon so that you can properly enjoy the new digs!
Thanks love. We really aren't alcoholics and don't drink generally until we binge for a few weeks and stop again haha. The more I drink the less I cope... Perhaps I'm on a wine comedown. Things will look up I'm sure.
Hope your old house sells ASAP! So frustrating.
I am awful and dilute wine with lemonade 🤣
Just for the extra sugar lol? Id never sleep! I dilute with soda water in summer sometimes.
If you haven't gotten to the red wine and coke stage yet, you're still good 😁 I hope you get a buyer soon!
Oh gawd that makes me laugh. I don't even drink coke on its own!!!
It's a thing here 🤢
I'd never heard of leaving a bottle of wine for the new owners, but that sounds like a good tradition! I can imagine how much you & Jamie need it after a day of remodeling. 😬 Just keep sending those positive vibes out into the world: The old house will sell soon... The old house will sell soon... The old house will sell soon... 💞
I love wine. But if I drink too much red wine, I get a headache. So I usually drink dry white wine. There are good, inexpensive wines for $3-4 a bottle.
