Breaking the laws of the government concerning food was a serious offense because it meant you were deliberately trying to destroy the world.

You make the story about food, but really, substitute any commodity. We consume energy and pollute the earth so future generations may not inherit a livable planet. In a way, that is terrorism--against future generations. But there is no world government to stop the 'crime' against future generations.

This is a nice symbolic story. All good science fiction has a message. This reminds me of something that might have been written by Philip K. Dick. And he's among the best.

Very correct. With the amount of disregard being shown to our home planet, it's very possible that future generations will pay dearly for it. All we can do as individuals presently is to try to save the planet in the little ways we can; plant a tree, avoid wasting and polluting water...
And it will go a long way in the preservation of other life forms.
