This is so good. Nothing simple here. It is an every day moment, an every day life and he wants to get on with it. And yet, this extraordinary thing happens. There is no training for such a moment. His response is human. He's not cruel, not omniscient, not indifferent. He's all of us suddenly jarred from our customary path.
The last sentence is perfect. He does care about the woman, but life goes on. His ordinary life continues and she disappears in the dark to a fate unknown.
