RE: Hello, Harbinger

I know now when I get ready to read your stories to strap myself in for the ride. First let me start with the pace. The narrative moves forward with such energy that we feel ourselves whipping around the town in Bootsie's truck. As for cliches. Never, ever in your stories. Always a fresh character, always a vivid scene. And the writing. Clear, careful, meticulous.

I read line like this:

and a forestry heritage that clung desperately to the periphery.

and I know I'm dealing with a writer.

Finally, you deliver an American story. I don't mean that in a xenophobic sense. I mean that in the sense that Flannery O'Connor, Mark Twain or Willa Cather serve up traditional American culture. You know I'm a country girl. Some of my ancestors settled the Hudson River Valley. So I feel the history of this country in my bones. Reading you is like visiting home.

Thanks for the treat.

Oh AG, you are a commentary balm for my soul, I swear. I really struggled with this story, I have been reading a lot about the craft of writing. The just blathering what's floating around in your cortex out, then leaving it, then going back to the draft and mercilessly sanding away at the words until just what needs to said remains. It's gloriously agonizing lol, but I want to get better.

I'm so glad the tale was a treat for you, your response was one for me, thank you😊

You do have a way. As for working hard...if you've ever read biographies of great authors, they almost always labor. They write and rewrite. A short story may be months in the planning, on and off again, as it takes shape.

When I write (not that I am any model) sometimes the story comes in a flash. But then the work begins. And, in a way, the fun. Because that's when I get to know myself, my style. Only I know where I want the story to go, how I want it to sound. I have a chisel, and I'm in complete control. I love this stage writing.

Your effort shows :)

I so loved reading your reply! You can tell that you love to methodically sculpt words to reveal your own unique take on whatever pops into your consciousness, a true word artist and appreciator of all who labor in the realm.

And you are so, so a model!
