Jericho: City of dreams
—"Now everybody dreams of living there..."
They were talking of an extraordinary city being built, something that had no precedents. It would be self-sustaining, a city that would produce everything its population required. There would be systems that took advantage of sunlight and wind, a dam and an artificial lake, abundant water, hydroponic gardens based on the most modern science. It would be an advanced city, handling state-of-the-art technology. The best universities and laboratories would be there. There was competition at many levels for a place within "Jericho, city of dreams".
Jericó: Ciudad de sueños
—"Ahora todo el mundo sueña con vivir ahí..."
Hablaban de la construcción de una ciudad extraordinaria, algo que no tenía precedentes. Sería autosustentable, una ciudad capaz de producir todo lo que su población consumía. Habría sistemas que aprovechaban la luz del sol y del viento, una represa y un lago artificial, agua en abundancia, huertos hidropónicos basados en la ciencia más moderna. Sería una ciudad de avanzada, que manejaría tecnología de punta. Las mejores universidades y laboratorios estarían allí. Había competencia a muchos niveles por un lugar dentro de "Jericó, ciudad de sueños".

Daniel Dupont, scientist and pioneer in the concept of the model city, said:
—"Let the others worry, we already have our secure space there."
Daniel was not the owner of the project, but he worked very hard on its design and development. He already owned shares in the Jericho conglomerate of buildings. The owners were already living there, along with family and friends. The Dupont family was preparing for the move.
The groundbreaking and opening of the city was approaching. Daniel was called in for an interview. His entire family was excited about the impending move to the big city.
—"I regret to inform you, Mr. Dupont, that your family was not selected to join Jericho," said Martin Phillips, spokesman and attorney for the Jericho Corporation.
—"There must be a misunderstanding, I am almost a co-founder of the project. I have shares there. You can't take away my space and my rights," Daniel replied.
—"Legally, you are not a co-founder. And I would like to inform you that Jericho has its own laws, already approved by state legislation. Jericho has the power to choose the members of its community. The shares that you own in Jericho are going to be reimbursed to you and, believe me, that transaction is going to make you an immensely rich man."
—"I don't want to be immensely rich, I want a place in the community I designed. How can you ignore that I am the author of this dream?"
—"Mr. Dupont. The Jericho Corporation is really grateful for your great work. I have not yet mentioned to you that you have been assigned a place in another housing center, the most highly rated after Jericho, and a 'provision' so that you will lack nothing for the rest of your life. But the decision about your non-partition in Jericho is 'final'. Forces more powerful than you and I have moved in this."
Daniel Dupont, científico y pionero en el concepto de la ciudad modelo, decía:
—"Que se preocupen los demás, nosotros ya tenemos nuestro espacio seguro allí."
Daniel no era el dueño del proyecto, pero trabajó muy duro en su diseño y desarrollo. Ya tenía acciones dentro del conglomerado de edificios de Jericó. Los dueños ya estaban viviendo allí, junto a familiares y amigos. La familia Dupont se estaban preparando para la mudanza.
Se acercaba la inauguración y apertura de la ciudad. Daniel fue llamado a una entrevista. Toda su familia se emocionó por el inminente ingreso a la gran ciudad.
—"Lamento informarle, Sr. Dupont, que su familia no fue seleccionada para formar parte de Jericó" expresaba Martin Phillips, vocero y abogado de la corporación Jericó."
—"Debe haber un malentendido, casi soy co-fundador del proyecto. Yo tengo acciones allí. No pueden quitarme mi espacio y mis derechos"respondió Daniel.
—"Legalmente, usted no es co-fundador. Y le informo que Jericó tiene sus propias leyes, ya aprobadas por la legislación del estado. Jericó tiene la potestad de escoger a los miembros de su comunidad. Las acciones que posee en Jericó le van a ser reembolsadas y, créame, que esa transacción lo va a convertir en un hombre inmensamente rico."
—"No quiero ser inmensamente rico, quiero un lugar en la comunidad que yo diseñé. ¿Cómo pueden ignorar que yo soy el autor de este sueño?"
—"Sr. Dupont. La corporación Jericó le está inmensamente agradecida por su aporte. Aún no le he mencionado que se le ha asignado un lugar en otro centro habitacional, el más cotizado después de Jericó, y una 'provisión' para que no le falte nada el resto de su vida. Pero la decisión sobre su no partipación en Jericó es 'final'. Fuerzas más poderosas que usted y que yo se han movido en esto."

Thus was Daniel and his family discarded from the elect. It was like a stab in the back to all his efforts. In the end, he accepted that he preferred not to be in a place where he was not wanted. He moved to a first class housing center, with expenses paid for life, besides having more money than he could spend.
The day of Jericho's inauguration arrived. The news appeared on the front page of the world's newspapers, in addition to the fact that the extraordinary innovations of that community were recurrent news, all day and every day. They not only showed but also produced cutting-edge technology. They managed to put three satellites into space and had their own nuclear reactor, such was the power of their technology. The greatest achievements in science and the arts came from Jericho. Two years of achievements and feats unmatched anywhere else in the world. Half of the world records in various disciplines were broken by inhabitants of the great fortified city.
Así fue descartado Daniel y su familia de los elegidos. Fue como una puñalada trapera a todos sus esfuerzos. Al final, aceptó que prefería no estar en un sitio donde no lo querían. Se mudó a un centro habitacional de primera, con gastos pagos de por vida, aparte de tener más dinero del que podía gastar.
Llegó el día de la inauguración de Jericó. La noticia apareció en primera página en los diarios del mundo, además de que eran noticia recurrente, todo el día y todos días, las extraordinarias innovaciones de esa comunidad. No solo mostraban sino que producían tecnología de punta. Lograron poner en el espacio tres satélites y tuvieron su propio reactor nuclear, así era el poder de su tecnología. Los mayores logros en ciencias y artes venían de Jericó. Dos años de logros y hazañas sin comparación en ningún otro lugar del mundo. La mitad de los récords mundiales en distintas disciplinas fueron derribados por habitantes de la gran ciudad fortificada.

But one day something unexpected happened inside Jericho, a large hole opened up in the middle of the street, causing accidents. The local authorities tried to deny the fact, but the eyes of the world were attentive to everything that happened there. The huge hole was repaired the same day it appeared, but three other similar holes appeared in different locations in the city. In one of them, two houses collapsed completely, spontaneously and without apparent explanation. The alarm was raised and the national authorities ordered the evacuation of the city. Many Jericho residents refused to leave their precious space.
Hole after hole appeared, joined together and became real abysses. Those who by that time wanted to flee could not, but were textually "swallowed up by the earth". The entire city disappeared in a deep depression.
Months later, there were those who said that the sinking of Jericho was due to the sinfulness and the traffic of influences that moved in the days in which shares were assigned in the city. They said: "Very bad people ended up displacing the legitimate heirs of the city".
Daniel Dupont, however, regretted the city's dramatic end. He became even richer, and world-renowned, by writing a book about all the phases of the project that ended up in the famous sinking. From that point, he made the decision to start his own project for the construction of a new model city. So he was yet to see and reach the real end of his dream...
Pero un día sucedió algo inesperado dentro de Jericó, se abrió un agujero grande en medio de la calle, provocando accidentes. Las autoridades locales intentaron negar el hecho, pero los ojos del mundo estaban atentos a todo lo que allí ocurría. El descomunal agujero fue reparado el mismo día que apareció, pero otros tres agujeros similares aparecieron en distintas locaciones de la ciudad. En uno de ellos, dos casas se hundieron completas, espontáneamente y sin explicación aparente. Se disparó la voz de alarma y las autoridades nacionales ordenaron la evacuación de la ciudad. Muchos habitantes de Jericó se negaron a dejar su preciado espacio.
Agujero tras agujero aparecían, se unían y se convertían en verdaderos abismos. Quienes para ese momento quisieron huir no pudieron, sino que fueron textualmente "tragados por la tierra". La ciudad completa desapareció en una depresión profunda.
Meses después, no faltó quien dijera que el hundimiento de Jericó se debió a la lobreguez de pecado y el tráfico de influencias que se movió en los días en que se asignaron participaciones en la ciudad. Decían: "Gente muy mala terminó desplazando a los legítimos herederos de la ciudad".
Daniel Dupont, sin embargo, lamentaba el dramático final de la ciudad. Se hizo todavía más rico, y reconocido mundialmente, escribiendo un libro sobre todas las fases del proyecto que terminó en el famoso hundimiento. A partir de ese hecho, tomó la decisión de iniciar su propio proyecto para la construcción de una nueva ciudad modelo. Así que aún estaba por ver y alcanzar el verdadero final de su sueño...
This story is so well written. It has an almost lyrical tone, and yet at the same time sinister. There is evil-doing afoot. Corruption, surely. Is it corruption that causes the city to be swallowed up? Is it something Daniel Dupont managed to do out of spite? If not, as he builds another city, will this not happen again?
There are many questions that come to mind about your story. It really is a puzzle in a good way (one wonders, if one thinks long enough, if the city collapses because of human overreach, human pride), but still, we actually do want to know why the city collapsed.
