It was a cold and rainy night, Nina who was home alone, had dozed off on the couch, wrapped in a big cozy blanket. The TV was on and her tea had gone cold. Everywhere was quiet—until her phone buzzed.
She reluctantly reached for it and looked at the screen.
She looked at it. A voicemail.
She pressed play.
“Get out now. They’re coming.”
The voice was deep, low and dangerously urgent. It sounded like a man who was terrified.
Nina sat frozen, her heart thumping against her ribs. She played it again, the message was short, but there was something about it that sent the shivers down her spine.
She called the police.
About twenty minutes later, there was a knock at the door. He introduced himself as Officer Ray.
He was tall, in his mid-40s, calm, and gentle eyes and Nina felt a little relieved as she opened the door.
She played the voicemail for him.
After listening, Ray smiled faintly. "It's most likely the usual prank call or a false alarm. Or maybe someone who just wants to scare people or could even be a wrong number, as well."
Nina shook her head. "No, no. It was personal. That voice... that voice, it was serious."
Ray asked if she had noticed anything strange going on lately.
"Well," began Nina uneasily, "last night, I thought I saw someone across the street... watching my building but it was dark so I didn't really think much of it."
“I’ll report it,” Ray said. “I’ll have a patrol car check your street tonight. Keep your doors locked, and don’t worry too much.”
He left, promising she could call him any time.
But Nina couldn’t sleep.
The second message came around 12:43 a.m., her phone buzzed again.
Another voicemail.
This time the voice said:
“Nina. I warned you. They know.”
He even knew her name. This was no prank call at all.
She called Officer Ray right away. He came back quickly.
She played the new message for him.
This time, his face changed. He looked more serious.
“That’s not a prank,” he admitted. “Now it feels targeted.”
“How does he know my name?” Nina asked, her voice shaking.
Ray asked again: “Is there anything you haven’t told me? Anyone from your past who might want to hurt you?”
Nina paused. Then she spoke.
“Years ago,” she said, “I worked at a women’s shelter. But one night, we made an exception and helped a young man. His name was Joel. He said he was trying to escape a criminal gang. He was scared for his life.”
She paused.
“He begged for help. He said he had information about some corrupt people, people working inside the police. He was going to testify so they wanted him dead.”
Ray’s face twitched slightly, but he said nothing.
“I helped him disappear. We got him fake ID papers, put him on a bus across the country. I never saw him again. But…”
“But what?” Ray asked.
Nina stared at him. “He was the only one at the shelter who knew my real name was Nina. Everyone else called me Ms. Pinto.”
Now, someone was calling her Nina.
And that someone was scared again.
Officer Ray stepped outside to make a call.
While he was gone, Nina’s phone buzzed.
Another voicemail.
She pressed play.
“They’re not police. They found me. Run.”
Her stomach dropped.
“They’re not police.”
She looked toward the door. Officer Ray was coming back inside.
“Another message?” he asked.
She nodded. “He said they’re not police. He said I should run.”
Ray’s eyes narrowed.
“So, what are you thinking, Nina? That I’m not who I say I am?”
She took a step back. “Can I… see your badge again?”
“You already saw it,” he said.
“I want to see it again.”
He reached slowly into his coat and pulled out a pistol.
Her instincts screamed – run. She turned and dashed down the hallway just as bullets tore through the walls, shattering picture frames and sending splinters flying.
Just then — sirens.
Red and blue lights flooded through the curtains. A voice boomed from a loudspeaker:
“This is the police! The house is surrounded! Drop your weapon and come out with your hands up!”
The real police had arrived.
Someone had called them. Someone had warned them that a woman was in danger.
Officer Ray’s badge was fake. His real name was Raymond James and he was a former detective who had been fired five years ago for being part of a corrupt ring of officers tied to drug trafficking, bribery, and murder.
Joel, the man Nina had helped years ago, had once worked with Ray. When Joel tried to leave the gang and expose them, Ray and the others marked him for death.
But Joel escaped — with Nina’s help.
Ray had been looking for Joel for years. He didn’t know where Joel had gone, but he found Nina. And he planned to use her to lure Joel out — or eliminate her to stop any trace of the past.
The voicemail warnings?
They were from Joel. Somehow, he had found Nina’s number and tried to warn her.
Raymond James was arrested that night, thanks to Joel’s 911 call.
The police finally reopened the old corruption case. Joel, still in hiding, agreed to testify under protection.
And Nina?
She moved again. Changed her name once more. But this time, she wasn’t just running — she was ready.
The call she had thought was a false alarm became the call that saved her life.

Thank you for reading.
Whew, this had me holding my breath the whole time. That slow build from eerie to full-blown danger was so well done -I honestly did not expect officer Ray to flip like that. Loved how everything tied back to Joel and Nina's past. It's scary how something as small as voicemail can spiral into a life or death moment. Really intense and beautifully written
Thank you very much.

Good one and an interesting story.
Lucky Nina that she escaped using her instinct.
Wow, Raymond went a long way to cover his secret. Who knows what would have happened to Nina if Joel hadn't intervened?
Thankfully Nina was unharmed at the end.
Officer Ray a criminal? Despite having been fired from the police force for his nefarious activities, he still continued.
"One good turn deserves another ", Nina helped Joel escape his assailants years ago and now he helps her escape a dangerous officer.
A beautiful read!
Joel is a good guy. One good turn deserves another and he helped Nina because she once helped him
That’s cool
Very cool!
Thank you very much 🙏
Nina was indeed lucky to have been saved that night. Who could've thought that officer was a fake one. It's a good thing that she took the voicemail serious
Yes indeed!
Thank you very much 🙏
