THE STRANGE ORDER

in The Ink Well20 days ago

Jimmy owned a small shop that produces and sells dreamcatchers. He had learned the craft from his grandmother. He had lived with her from when he was only four years old until she died some seven years back. He took over the trade and was known within and outside his environ as the best at the craft.

One day, shortly before he closed this shop, a client walked in. An old man that could barely walk. Must have been in his eighties. His voice betrayed his looks as it sounded full, and he was friendly.

"Hello, Sir. Welcome to my place, hoe may i be of service," Jimmy asked, beaming.

"I want a dreamcatcher. Heard you're the best vendor around town," the man said slowly.

"You heard correct. Which do you want? Any specifics?" Jimmy asked.

"Yes. I want..." He went along to read his order.

Jimmy's ears tickled and his mouth fell open but he immediately shut it before the man noticed his reaction. There was something strange about him - the old man. His order too, was a bit strange.
Because, the dreamcatcher he ordered for was supposed to be completely black and with really strange formation on/about it.

"Would that be any problem? Can you handle making it," the old man asked.

"Yes, yes, of course it's no problem. Whatever your order, I am able," Jimmy collected himself as he replied, giving a small smile.

Jimmy never questioned the man's choice. That wasn't any of his business. So inspite of his curiosity, he let his lips stay glued to each other.
He was there for business and was definitely going to deliver on it.

Jimmy fulfilled that order and some days after, the elderly man came to pick it up and that marked a sealed business transaction.

A few weeks later, Jimmy was vsisting his grandmother's grave at the local cemetery and suddenly, he noticed that the exact dreamcatcher he had made for the old man from days before was hanging on a grave.

He could tell he had made it cause his works are handmade and uniques, with the initials of his brand name - J.K(as in, Jimmy's Kraft) engraved on it. And so immediately and unmistakably, he recognized that it was the dreamcatcher he made.

He thought to himself: Probably, the old man ordered the dreamcatcher for someone's funeral. It makes perfect sense why it was supposed to be black.

But then, his eyes caught sight of the name and photograph on the grave. It was the name and photo of the old man who had visited his shop.

He thought: Okay, maybe he died recently and his relatives hung the item on his grave because he loved it so much.

But when he saw the date written on the man's grave, he froze.
The year of death was 1987.
Present year was 2017.

You are wwlcome

This is a catchy story. It has a lot of potential. You probably could have developed it more. For example, you could have given us a better idea of what the cemetery looked like. This would have been a good opportunity to create atmosphere. A couple of more opportunities: in the beginning, you could have set the stage for the creepy events that followed by describing the way Jimmy felt about inheriting the shop. Or, even more significantly, you could have given us a richer description of the old man, the way he was dressed, the way he walked, his complexion. Were his eyes peculiar? Details like that really round out a story.

Still, have have good material here and you handle it competently. Nice finish.

Thank you for sharing this with us, @cheeamaka.
