REGRET

The moment I heard she was in the hospital, it felt like all the breath in my body left me at once. I was filled with so much panic but still I couldn’t help but think of all the things my pride denied me form telling her.

Now she is just lying there with no sign of life in her except the beeping machine beside her bed letting me know her beautiful heart hasn’t given up yet.

She wasn’t this quiet you know, she was upbeat and filled with laughter. She had the most beautiful laugh, it was loud and so very infectious. I remember the times I told her to tone it down. I could see the disappointment on her face as if it was in front of me.

She was so pretty too, her eyes were always bright, and I can swear to you right now they sparkle. Her hair was always a mess, she never took care of herself but no one could deny how beautiful she was.

I told her to take better care of herself, I told her to wear things she never wanted to. I called her fat when she asked me how she looked.

I thought if I wasn’t too nice she wouldn’t leave, no wonder she broke up with me. I was awful to her, I think I was in denial that someone this amazing was with someone as dull as me.

It’s no excuse but God, if you wake her up, I will be so good to her. God, please... let her regain her consciousness..

Suddenly I could feel her hands moving. I grabbed them more tightly, so I could be sure I wasn’t imagining it. Nothing..... And just when I was about to give up, I felt it again.

I stood up from my seat and started calling her name. I couldn’t believe it, my heart was beating so fast that I could hear it drumming in my ears. God listens after all.

“Open your eyes baby” I pleaded.

And at that moment her eyelids fluttered open. She closed them and opened them back a few times trying to adjust to the light. I didn’t know what to say I just stared. She stared back, inquisitive look in her eyes.

“I’m so glad your back” I choked between tears.

She took a big gulp of air and tried to say something, but these words weren't forthcoming. She was still struggling to speak when I touched those soft lips of hers, and asked her not to speak... oh! how I missed those lips of hers.

I was leaning for a kiss when I heard her “who are you?”

It seems that in life we fail appreciate values until we are about to lose them.

It is the irony, we hardly care for what we already have until we reach a point to lose it.
The climax was miserable. The imagination shivered me

So sad we tend to always fail to notice or care for those around us until the last moment...thanks for your comment..

A touching emotional read and then the last line is devastating

Reminds us to show those we love and care about how we feel before it is to late

You are right sir... We must always seek to show those we love how much we care about them before its too late. I doubt if I would have the opportunity to right my wrong anymore because she seems not to remember who I am. So painful..

Firs thing no need for Sir, please call me anything else JJ for example

that must be so painful but focus on the positive you have leant from this experience

You are still a sir where I am.. I can't be calling you by your name.. I wasn't brought up that way. I hope you understand...

That’s fine if it’s your way I can accept that

Thanks for your understanding... I appreciate

What?!!! She doesn't recognize you anymore? That's so heartbreaking to imagine, I wonder the hurt you caused her to have forgotten you that easily or was it because of the incidence that caused her to be hospitalized?

People are like that sometimes, not appreciating what they have but realizing it later when they're about to lose them or have loss them.

Nice and creative one, got here through @dreemport

I think she couldn't recognize me because of the incident and not because of what I did to her. I am glad you understood the story.. We should always take time to appreciate and cherish those around us because sooner than later, we might not have them around anymore..

Has she lost her memory? That would be more painful and difficult to him. I wish she never did or am I the one guessing that? Lol
@dreemport led me here.

This is what is called cliff hanger... The readers are meant to be in suspense, wondering what really happened. I won't say anything about this... I'll leave it to yo to figure it out yourself... 😂 😂 What I will tell you is that she couldn't recognize who I was anymore..

What a sad story. We forget to appreciate our loved ones because we are confident that they never leave. However, we only realize it when something awful happens. Great story.

Thanks so much for your comment.. We should learn to express ourselves and speak out when we have the time... Nobody knows tomorrow...

Your story has a great ending. Some stories have a gentle curve and a gentle resolution. This one seems to build from the first word to that last startling phrase, "Who are you?"

Oh how very sad! Just when the narrator believed the love of his life was coming back to him, it turned out she has amnesia. While it's sad, I love that last line.

I am glad you got the message behind the story. Its really so sad knowing she wouldn't be able to recognize me again.. I just pray a miracle happens...
