The Chance of a Lifetime

in The Ink Well6 days ago

Trevor had graduated from the university a year ago, he graduated with a first class in Economics. Everyone had expected his life to change immediately he graduated.

But a year passed, and he still had no job. He would walk around in a neatly ironed shirt and his documents. He had applied to every company he could find online that still had some vacant spots. He had gone for countless interviews but none worked out. They would say “We’ll get back to you,” but they never did.

He didn’t give up trying, there was no one he could rely on, he had only his mother and he didn’t want to trouble her. That morning, he had another interview. The interview was only for a few minutes.

“We’ll contact you.” He knew what that meant, he knew he didn’t get in. He walked out of the building, already tired for all he was going through.

He saw a waffle stand at the roadside. He had skipped breakfast this morning. He walked towards the waffle stand and sat on the bench as he ate, he would try again another day. He noticed an old man sitting just by him and he was eating quietly.

“You look worried, young man.” The old man asked after a while.

“Just tired, sir.” Which he really was. The old man stared at his clothes and the bag he carried.

“Job?”

“Been searching for over a year now.” The old man smiled.

“Ah, I get it, so many of us have been there. You finished well?”

“Yes sir. First class.”

“First class? That’s good. But you see, life isn’t all about the paper. Sometimes it just tests how far you can go. You just have to be patient”

Trevor stared at the old man. They talked for a while and Trevor told him about what he was going through. Telling him all about how his mother had raised him by herself and sent him to school and he did well in school so he could get a good job and take care of her.

The old man reached into his pocket and gave him a card.

“Go to this address tomorrow. Show them the card and tell them Mr. Daniel sent you.” Trevor took the card. It had a company name and address printed on it.

“Thank you sir.” Trevor face brightened with a smile.

“Don’t thank me yet, young man. Just do you best.”

The next morning, Trevor put on his best clothes and went to the company’s address.

“I was asked to come by Mr. Daniel.” Trevor showed the card to the receptionist who flashed him a smile.

“Mr. Daniel told us you would be coming. You’d be assigned to the Accounting department for now. Congratulations.” Finally. It so happened that the old man was the founder of that company. Trevor sang and danced when he got him, he was truly happy.

Weeks passed and Trevor worked really hard. He was dedicated and always finished a task when handed to him. That morning, Trevor found out that Mr. Daniel was sick and had been admitted to the hospital. He was shocked, he hadn’t seen the old man since that day so he visited the hospital after work.

“You came, boy.” He smiled weakly.

“Yes sir. I just wanted to see how you were doing.”

“The doctor said it’s a brain tumor, I knew for a while now that I didn’t have much time left. I have children, boy. But none of them can take care of the company. They only care about the money.” He sighed. “I sat at that waffle stand that day to enjoy the little things, I wanted to do a lot more before I go but…” He paused. “I’ve been watching you, your reports and honesty. I see myself in you, boy.”

“Sir, you gave me a chance when no one else did, even when you knew nothing about me. I owe everything to you.” Tears filled Trevor’s eyes.

“Is that so? Then you must promise me something.”

“Anything, sir.” “Promise me you will keep my company alive, promise me that you would take good care of it and not let it fall into the wrong hands.”

“Sir?” Trevor asked in disbelief. “I promise.”

“Good. Everything you need has been arranged. My lawyers will see you soon. Get some rest, boy.”

A week later, Mr. Daniel passed away. And at the reading of his will, everyone was shocked when the lawyer announced that the ownership of the company has been transferred to Trevor.

Tears rolled down Trevor’s face. He remembered his words, “But you see, life isn’t all about the paper. Sometimes it just tests how far you can go. You must be patient”.

The old man had trusted him to run a company this big even when he didn’t know him that much. Trevor promised himself that he would live up to his promise and never let his trust go to waste.
