For me, probabilities say that we are actually surrounded by alien life forms. Alien life forms that are incompatible with our consciousness.
Here comes the old recount of a human walking in the park and passing by an ant colony.
Will the human stop and try to "talk" to the ants ? We don't see many city dwellers trying to establish communication with "park roaming ants" at all. Those who do it, must surely be nuts by our human standards.
Moreover, with trillions and trillions of ants in the world, what percentage of ants do you think have ever seen a human in their lifetimes ? And of the few unfortunate ants that have encountered humans made it alive, I ponder what opinion they must have on us. It could be either the scientist taking a batch of ants to the lab to study or a child playing with ants by crushing them with his shoes just for the fun of it.
Now, replace ants with humans and humans with aliens in the recount above and you have the perfect analogy of why we do or don't see aliens around us. And of the few times we see them, it is very scary for the ones who experienced the encounter.
