Twelve Minutes to Midnight: The Deadline of No Return

in The Ink Well3 months ago (edited)

The dimly lit control room buzzed with tension as Ethan Clarke stared at the countdown on the screen—12 minutes and 00 seconds. A deep breath did little to steady his shaking hands. The encrypted file sat open in front of him, containing a dark secret that could bring down one of the most powerful criminal syndicates in the world. If he didn’t upload it before midnight, his chance would be gone forever. Worse, the men hunting him would make sure he never got another one.

A sharp knock echoed through the empty building. They had found him. Ethan snatched the flash drive and stuffed it into his pocket, scanning the room for an exit. His only way out was the fire escape, but the security system had locked the doors—he would have to override it first. 11 minutes left. His fingers danced across the keyboard, bypassing the firewall, but a red alert flashed across the screen: "Access Denied. Security Breach Detected."

A muffled voice came through his earpiece. “Ethan, it’s Ava. They’ve blocked the network—you need a direct connection to the main server.” Ethan’s heart pounded. The main server was in the basement, past armed guards. 10 minutes left. He bolted down the hallway, his breath ragged. He couldn’t fail—not when so many lives depended on this.

Reaching the stairwell, he peered through the gap in the door. Two guards patrolled the basement entrance. No way through. He pressed his earpiece. “Ava, I need a distraction.” A second later, the building’s alarm system blared. The guards sprinted toward the sound. Ethan seized the moment, slipping past them and racing down the stairs. 8 minutes left.

Inside the server room, rows of blinking machines lined the walls. He plugged in the flash drive and began the upload. 75%... 80%... A voice behind him made his blood run cold. “Step away from the computer.” He turned slowly. Marcus Voss, the ruthless crime lord Ethan had betrayed, stood in the doorway, gun in hand. “You should’ve run when you had the chance.” 6 minutes left.

Ethan’s mind raced. Stalling was his only option. “Marcus, you don’t understand. This isn’t just about you. There’s evidence in there that connects your allies to a global arms trade. If I stop now, someone else will finish what I started.” Marcus smirked, stepping closer. “Then I’ll make sure you don’t get that chance.” He raised his gun. 4 minutes left.

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, a deafening explosion shook the building. Smoke filled the room as the ceiling cracked. Ava’s voice crackled in Ethan’s ear. “That was me buying you time—get out NOW!” Ethan dove behind the desk, yanking the flash drive free. Upload Complete. Sirens wailed outside. The police were coming. Marcus cursed and fled, knowing his empire was crumbling. 2 minutes left.

Ethan staggered to his feet, adrenaline surging. As he emerged from the burning building, he saw Ava waiting beside a black van. She grinned. “Twelve minutes to midnight, and you made it.” Ethan exhaled. It was over. The truth was out. Lives would be saved. But he knew the war wasn’t finished—only the battle. “Next time,” he said, “let’s aim for twenty minutes.”

As they sped away, Ethan’s mind raced through the past few months. He had risked everything—his identity, his safety, his life—to expose the truth. But justice came at a cost. He and Ava were now fugitives, with enemies in high places. “We have to disappear,” he said, watching the city lights fade behind them. “At least for now.” Ava nodded. “We’ll lay low, but this isn’t over. We’ve cut off one head of the snake, but others will rise.” Ethan tightened his grip on the seatbelt. He had once thought of walking away, but now he knew—some battles weren’t fought for personal gain. Some fights were bigger than survival.

The van disappeared into the night, leaving behind the ruins of Marcus Voss’s empire. The truth was out, and the world would change because of it. Ethan had beaten the clock, but the next countdown had already begun. Because in the fight for justice, there was always another deadline. And time was never on their side.

The fight for Justice is won battle by battle . Luckily they won the all important first battle and can easily build on that with the time bought.

I love the time update at the end of those paragraphs and really enjoyed reading. Clarke had two choices and out of selflessness, he did what was best for everyone and not just himself.

Thanks to Ava who created the distraction when required... The fight against corruption really never ends.

I enjoyed reading every bit of the story. To make headway, they needed to put in extra work, which they did, and that is the beauty. Kudos agba writer
