Its interesting how different people approach writing differently, I always used to give my characters a bit of me, something I had been through or was feeling, sometimes it was subtle, and just a pov i've experienced for a description, other times it was things I was struggling to process, but a very respected commenter and curator pointed out how to them that just seemed like making everything about me, and I ended up feeling like it was vain to use any part of me in my writing. It's good to hear not everyone thinks like that, I have been slowly giving bits back to characters, just because it's always been how i've dealt with things and without it I'm not as good at processing and it's a relief to hear someone say that it is okay, at least from their perspective.
I have got through some of the hardest days i've faced by writing, and it's not always by giving things the processing space in writing, some times it the other way around, and can tell very simple (probably not actually counting as stories in terms of having enough conflict) stories about someone reaching a point of acceptance, moving on with their life, letting go, or just feeling okay, and find it really helps. I ended up writing something I probably wouldn't have otherwise thanks to this place, and @raj808, about someone who sets out to cease to be, and finds another way of being, that I would say was good for me to write. I'm not a serious writer, but the catharsis of creating a world unto yourself and this idea
Maybe it was so that later on you could turn those events into works of fiction.
really helps find the silver lining sometimes. Great tips, very much appreciated.
I loved reading your comment, @letalis-laetitia! (And I'm very sorry for the long delay! I am going back now to find comments I have missed.) Processing things is a great reason to write fiction, in my humble opinion. But that aside, writing what you know can infuse your writing with an amazing richness because you are pulling it from a place of knowledge and experience.
I have heard famous writers say that every character has pieces of them. And that makes so much sense to me. We humans are such complex beings. To be able to draw from the various aspects of our personalities and our past experiences in the craft of fiction is an amazing gift.
