A dream for a dream
He was a strong boy and had been working on the farm since he was ten years old. His family raised chickens, sheep and pigs. Also, there were horses and Ewan was a good trainer and rider of these equestrian animals.
His boots, always full of horse shit because he liked being in the stable, made him slip on the floor of the house. His mother shouted at him to take off his boots before entering but Ewan was stubborn and did not pay attention.
Many times he would fall to the floor because of his boots, were dirty always, but he would get up with a smile and say to himself
When I take the shit out of these boots, it's gone be because I'm getting out of here.
He would get up very early, with the cocks crowing at five in the morning, and go and pick up the eggs from the chickens.
Then he'd go back to the house for coffee and breakfast. And he'd go back to his life as a farmer.
Ewan dreamed of going to see the sea but he didn't have enough money to make such a long trip. Besides, his parents didn't agree with him leaving because they needed him to take care of the animals.
Taking the sheep up the mountain to graze, he saw the green landscape of the fields and took a photo of the sea in his wallet. He was ecstatic between the royal green and the blue of fantasy.
The Williams' black van stopped in front of Ewan's house which was feeding the pigs. A girl with brown hair and white skin stepped out of the van with a lot of glamour. She was Hazel, the oldest daughter of the Williams family, who was on school vacation and would be spending two months at her parents' house.
Ewan's mother, Caroline, was very happy with the visit and invited them to lunch to celebrate the reunion of the two families.
While preparing food in the kitchen, Ewan entered the house and looked at Hazel who was in the hallway. Ewan slipped and fell to the ground with an incredible blow to the arm. Everyone turned to the young man lying on the floor, except Hazel, who was already looking at him.
It was the first time Ewan had not said his favourite sentence. He was speechless on the floor and slowly rose to his feet while still looking at Hazel.
It was love at first sight.
Caroline ordered Ewan to change his boots and clothes because they had guests for lunch.
Ewan left the house without saying anything and went straight to his bath. Then he came back.
Ewan did not say a word during the meal but his manners were rough as always. Hazel, but, shyly kept seeing him from time to time.
Pete Williams, unaware of the furtive glances among the youngsters, asked Ewan to prepare a horse for the next day because Hazel wanted to do a tour of the fields.
Ewan nodded; He got up from the table and before leaving asked to be excused for being absent.
The truth was that he was uncomfortable and it was the first time a girl had caught his eye.
That night Ewan dreamt of the sea and Hazel bathing in it.
The next morning, Ewan woke up before the roosters crowed. He went to the stable to choose the horse and put a saddle on it.
Hazel arrived at eight in the morning. And again, as the eyes crossed, the young men were enthralled. They went out riding together but hardly spoke to each other. Ewan was petrified and Hazel was too shy to take the initiative to start a conversation.
On the way back, Ewan kindly helped the girl off her horse and walked with her to the waiting van. They said goodbye with a handshake that caused butterflies to flutter in Hazel's stomach.
Several days passed without seeing each other again. Ewan was more distracted than ever and Caroline sensed it. Her son was in love.
Meanwhile, at the Williams' house there was a big fight because they also realized that Hazel liked Ewan. According to his, Ewan was not the right man for her and Pete was willing to send her back to school early.
Hazel's mother, Marie, intervened several times to calm Pete down. She knew more about Ewan's nobility and knew that he was a good boy and a hard worker. She didn't know him at all as a womaniser and that was enough for her.
At the Johnson farm, Ewan opened his heart to his mother. He told her everything he felt and that he didn't know what to do.
One Sunday, Caroline lovingly asked her son to bathe and dress in his best suit because they were going to ask the Williams' permission to court the girl.
They arrived at the Williams' house at 10 a.m. Ewan dressed in blue pants and a white shirt. His shoes were impeccably clean and he even wore cologne.
They were warmly received and invited to have a refreshing drink on the porch of the house. Caroline talked to Pete and Marie while Ewan was quiet.
Hazel had not left her room on her father's orders.
Finally, her mother went to fetch her and told her everything was arranged. Ewan was granted permission to court the girl.
Hazel and Ewan started going out every evening. Their meetings were few in number but very romantic. Ewan fell more in love every day and she admired all of Ewan's courtesies.
The eloquence returned to the boy and on each tour Ewan told her everything he did in the mornings. He told her about the roosters, the sheep and the horses. He told him the human names he had given to some animals and why.
Hazel laughed a lot at her lover's witticisms. They were happy.
It wasn't long before Ewan was no longer dreaming of the sea but of Hazel riding in the meadow. The date for the marriage just had to be decided and the young lovers were looking forward to that day soon.
