CNF — THE BEGINNING OF AN END

I sat on one of the high stools in the bar, close to the counter, staring at my glass cup. The half liquid in it glowing under the bright lights that shone dimly throughout the bar. A slow soft rhythm played in the background. I could hear the low chats of some regular customers at the other end. It had been a little bit quiet for two hours. I could tell, seemed like the bar was almost empty. But my mind was in another place to care about that right now. I signalled the bar attendant to get me another drink as I gulped down the one I held in my hands all at once.

The liquor burned in my throat, the hot and stinging sensation was just what I needed. This was my fourth glass tonight, but I didn't care. I wanted to forget all about my problems.

I got fired today, the news came like a truck crashing all over me. I felt weak to my bones. I didn't know what to do, especially as my pregnant wife was due, and could give birth at any time now. This was possibly the worst time to lose my job, I thought.

“Don't take it personal, Mr Blessing, we are restructuring, budget cuts. Hope you understand”

My mind flashed back to earlier that evening. They said it would make everything better. I didn't say anything, just nodded my head, too stunned to speak. I definitely didn't expect to get fired after everything I gave to that company. But that was the least of my problems.

How was I going to break the news to my pregnant wife? She would probably be at home, sitting on the couch as usual, watching her favourite Tv series as she waits for me to come back home with a big smile on my face and the supplements she had texted me earlier to get for her.

A message popped up on my screen,
“Honey, don't forget to get the supplements”

I gulped down the remaining drink I had in my hands and signalled again for another one. However, the bartender walked up to me this time, and informed me they were about to close.

I hit the glass a bit hard on the table, seemingly frustrated. How had my whole life come down to this, I thought as I fought to get off the stool to make my payments. The whole world buzzed around me as I staggered a little on my feet. The alcohol had made me a bit tipsy, but I could still hold my own. Slowly, I walked out of the bar

The cold night air hit my skin, slobbering me up a little. I stopped on my tracks, unsure of where to go. I wasn't ready to go home just yet. I felt like a failure. I needed to collect my thoughts and next point of action. After a few minutes of standing there with uncertainty, my feet began moving again, this time with no direction. I just continued walking, my mind far deep in thoughts

Until I collided with someone.

I fell hard to the ground, holding my arms in pain.
I looked up and saw a tall man staring down at me, with his hands stretched out to help me up.

“Daniel?” He called

I scrunched my eyebrow in confusion. Who was this young man? And how did he know my name? Reluctantly, I took his hands and helped myself up on my feet.

“Alex” I said with realization upon seeing him closely.

He smiled at me “Man, it’s been like, what? ten years?” he said, giving me a one-armed hug.

“Indeed it has” I replied back

“So what are you doing around here?” he asked, curious.

The small smile I had on my face disappeared as I remembered my predicament

“Actually, I just lost my job today” I said quietly

“I’m sorry about that, what do you plan to do now?” He asked

“Honestly, I’m just so losses, and my pregnant wife, Rita is almost due “ I said frustrated

Alex crossed his arms. “You know, I actually work in a tech logistics firm now. It's a small company, just starting up, and we’re hiring project coordinators.”

I looked up at him wondering if I was hearing things.

“Are you serious?,” I asked almost excitedly.

“Of course, You were always so organized, smart and good with people. I can put in a word for you. Just send me your résumé.”

I laughed, everything seeming so unbelievably

“You’ll really do that” I asked to confirm what I just heard.

“Why not, you were a very good friend to me back in college” he said tapping me on the shoulders

“Thank you” I said sincerely, feeling so grateful

We exchanged phone contact, hugged each other and parted ways.

Feeling hopeful, I decided to go back home to my pregnant wife. I might had lost my job today, but this night might just mark the beginning of a better one. I took out my phone from my pocket seeing three missed call from my wife and quickly wrote a short text to her

“Had a rough day today, but I’m on my way home. Tell you all about it when I get home. Love you”

Danie must have felt so frustrated and sad having to loose a job with a baby on the way. Talk about wrong timing. Interesting story. Thanks for sharing

The alcohol is an easy way to avoid all your problems. But I am glad you found a new job😁👍🏽

It can be so frustrating to lose a job, and having a pregnant wife at the same time. That was definitely a tough time
It's good how you got another job after reconnecting
