FICTION - RIPPLE EFFECTS

in The Ink Well2 days ago

There has never been a history defining moment like October 12th, 1950. What happened on that day changed the fate of humanity forever.

Let us start from the beginning.

Dr Riley was a very ambitious scientist. He found it embarrassing that humans were susceptible to diseases.
"It's high time we became invincible" he would often say.

Dr Riley didn't just want a cure for diseases, he wanted humans to become a biologically advanced species. A species whose health didn't deteriorate, nor eyesight diminish nor physical strength wane with age.

Dr Riley began to work on a serum. He worked with Jeremy on it. Jeremy was his assistant.

Dr Riley took DNA samples from a lot of animal species. He wanted the perfect serum. Jeremy had his reservations.

"I have a bad feeling about this Riley. A lot of the things you put in the serum are extreme. I feel like we are playing God" Jeremy said on one occasion.

"You have a small mind Jeremy. Humanity should be the ultimate species. As it stands, we are too limited. I want to change that. We can be something more, we can be something unfathomable" Dr Riley responded.

On the special day of October 12th, Dr Riley took the serum to test out what he had made. Jeremy witnessed it.

On taking the serum, Dr Riley started to get symptoms. His body began to transform in a horrible manner. His skin hardened and developed scales. He became a monster.
Jeremy watched the horror unfold before his eyes.

"Dr Riley, you've changed. You look terrible" Jeremy said, frightened to death.

"I feel amazing. I feel stronger, healthier than I've ever been, I can see in different wavelengths. This is best for us. The world can only change if we evolve" Dr Riley replied.

Jeremy saw clearly now that Dr Riley had lost his mind. He also realized that whatever Dr Riley did to himself was contagious. Luckily, Jeremy was far away, and he ran out of that building as fast as he could.

That day marked the greatest threat to humanity. Whatever happened to Dr Riley spread through cities. It was like a contagious disease. People started becoming monsters by the second. Civilization was collapsing, and so was humanity. Soon, it affected every nation. There were fewer humans on earth compared to monsters. The monsters littered the planet, while humans were left to hide. Governments collapsed, order collapsed, and everywhere was like a wasteland.

5 years later

Jeremy managed to survive everything that happened. He was in hiding with the other humans.
Feeding became difficult because they could barely go out to look for food. The monsters were on the hunt for the remaining humans in order to transform them.

Jeremy regretted why he didn't try harder to stop Dr Riley back then. He knew now that the only way to correct what happened was to go back in time and prevent Dr Riley from making that serum.
So with the help of the other surviving humans, Jeremy built a time machine.
On the day they tested it out, the machine broke down before it could create a time portal. But that didn't discourage Jeremy and the others. They fixed it and this time it worked.

As soon as the machine was turned on, it created a portal set for 5 years ago. Jeremy jumped through it and showed up at the exact moment five years ago when Dr Riley was about to take the serum.

"Don't do it Dr Riley!" Future Jeremy screamed.
Dr Riley was shocked, and so was Jeremy from the past who was also there.

"How is this possible? How can there be two Jeremys?" Dr Riley asked, with the serum still in his hand.

Jeremy from the past was still in shock seeing another version of himself.

"I'm from the future. Everything is in chaos. If you take that serum, you're going to create a deadly, contagious syndrome that would turn nearly all humans to monsters. The world collapsed, and that's why I'm here. Please don't take it" Future Jeremy said.

Dr Riley thought about it. If someone had to come from the future to prevent him from doing it, then it must be really bad.
Dr Riley threw away the serum and burnt all of his research on it.

Crisis averted. Things got better, humanity was saved and there were no monsters.

However, years later, people began to vanish one by one. Reality was under threat. This was because Jeremy messed with time by going back.
The fabric of time was eroding as a result of what Jeremy did and humans have to figure out a way to correct it.

Sending great vibes and Ecency votes your way.

A was a very entertaining story to read. I really like stories with time travel and apocalyptic disasters. Everything ended relatively well, although there was some collateral damage.

Thanks for sharing your story with us.
