Abusive!!
I can't even imagine such an experience for a child from his father. I don't know what miracle happened that you made a close bond with him at the end, would love to hear that. To be honest, this kinda behavior is very horrible for a kid's upbringing. Being strict is fine but beating like this is really unacceptable.
