Adrift
_The Coast Guard found 10 bodies this morning on the seashore, but mom said that the tv news has not said anything and that the president has been speaking since morning on a national network and has not said anything either. We all watched her, waiting for her to finish speaking. She was the one who always kept us informed because the only television set in town was the one in her house and she only picked up one channel: the government channel. The stifling midday breeze blew in each of our faces.
Angelita llegó a la plaza con la noticia:
La Guardia Costera encontró 10 cuerpos esta mañana a la orilla del mar, pero mamá dijo que el noticiero de la televisión no ha dicho nada y que el presidente ha estado hablando desde la mañana en una cadena nacional y tampoco ha dicho nada. Todos la observamos, esperando que terminara de hablar. Ella era la que siempre nos mantenía informados porque el único televisor de la ciudad era el de su casa y sólo captaba un canal: el del gobierno. La sofocante brisa del mediodía soplaba en cada una de nuestras caras.
We all knew it was more than 10 people, because we saw them when they arrived in town looking for someone to take them by boat to another country. There were more women than men and even children. They were happy because they were running away and the same running away took away their fear. I saw them and thought that sometimes the desire for freedom can make people brave. Some fishermen and I refused to take them and made them see the danger they were in because the sea was rough. However, they spent the whole afternoon searching, asking, who could get them out of the country until they convinced Juan, who even though at first he said no, when they offered him twice the money, he could not refuse the offer.
Todos sabíamos que eran más de 10 personas, porque los vimos cuando llegaron a la ciudad buscando a alguien que los llevara en barco a otro país. Había más mujeres que hombres e incluso niños. Estaban felices porque estaban huyendo y la misma huida les quitaba el miedo. Los vi y pensé que a veces el deseo de libertad puede hacer a la gente valiente. Algunos pescadores y yo nos negamos a llevarlos y les hicimos ver el peligro que corrían porque el mar estaba agitado. Sin embargo, se pasaron toda la tarde buscando, preguntando, quién podría sacarlos del país hasta que convencieron a Juan, quien aunque al principio dijo que no, cuando le ofrecieron el doble de dinero, no pudo rechazar la oferta.
They arrived from other towns in buses that had been hired by a government candidate to hold a rally and to make the rally look very crowded. Flags and red flannels flooded the sidewalks. The government always did that: it forced the workers to go to all the marches. From our windows and doors, we saw the red parade go by in the midst of the dust and the inclement sun. Those who walked were throwing praise on behalf of the government, but they still had sadness and hunger attached to their bodies. When the bus left, this group of people stayed, as if they had deserted more than of a caravan, from of a country.
Llegaron de otras ciudades en autobuses que habían sido contratados por un candidato del gobierno para hacer un mitin y hacer que el mitin pareciera muy concurrido. Banderas y franelas rojas inundaron las aceras. El gobierno siempre hizo eso: obligó a los trabajadores a ir a todas las marchas. Desde nuestras ventanas y puertas, vimos pasar el desfile rojo en medio del polvo y el sol inclemente. Los que caminaban lanzaban alabanzas en nombre del gobierno, pero todavía tenían la tristeza y el hambre pegados a sus cuerpos. Cuando el autobús se fue, este grupo de personas se quedó, como si hubieran desertado más que de una caravana, de un país.
It was 8 o'clock at night that day when, being in the square, Angelita arrived with the news that Juan would be taking the people. We all began to discuss the urgent reasons that the people of this country have for leaving, but even so we must not forget the dangers, trying to be heard. We all remained silent for a long time, then Angelita spoke again and said: perhaps it is more dangerous to live in this country. Again there was a long silence.
Eran las 8 de la noche de ese día cuando, estando en la plaza, Angelita llegó con la noticia de que Juan se llevaría a la gente. Todos comenzamos a discutir las razones urgentes que tiene la gente de este país para irse, "pero aún así no debemos olvidar los peligros", dije yo tratando de ser escuchado. Todos permanecimos en silencio durante mucho tiempo, luego Angelita volvió a hablar y dijo: tal vez sea más peligroso vivir en este país. De nuevo hubo un largo silencio.
So when Angelita told us about the shipwreck today, it was not a surprise to us. Several of us who were in the square went to the beach. There all the Coast Guard had the area cordoned off. Supposedly the sea kept bringing more bodies to the shore. I saw how the faded red shirts left a scarlet trace in the sand and I had the ugly feeling that not only was that boat adrift, but the whole country was about to sink.
Así que cuando Angelita nos contó hoy lo del naufragio, no nos sorprendió. Varios de los que estábamos en la plaza fuimos a la playa. Allí todos los guardacostas tenían acordonada la zona. Supuestamente el mar seguía trayendo más cuerpos a la orilla. Vi cómo las camisas rojas descoloridas dejaban un rastro escarlata en la arena y tuve la fea sensación de que no sólo ese barco estaba a la deriva, sino que todo el país estaba a punto de hundirse.
