I really identify with Johnny in that situation. It might seem exaggerated to cry when you realize you've made a serious mistake, but it's a natural reaction to helplessness and frustration.

A long time ago, I lost my phone at school. (Or rather, it was stolen, but it was my fault.) I let it happen, and when I realized what had happened, I broke down and cried. Not only had I made a mistake by trusting the wrong people, but I had also let my parents down.

What happened to Johnny was different, but it's genuine, and I'm glad to hear he was lucky enough to get a scholarship.
