“Ha! Mr Godwin, you're still here” Madam Koso said, surprised to still see one of the staff in school. There was no response as he was still putting his head on his table.
She called again, yet there was no response. “What could be the problem”? She reasoned. She then walked a step further and touched him.
He awoke, looked lost and unaware that school had closed some hours ago. It was obvious that he was in a deep sleep. How could he have fallen so easily to sleep in the staff room filled with other staff, and no one cares to wake him up?
“Are you okay”? Madam Koso asked, interrupting his thoughts. He took out a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped his face, which was full of sweat.
“Madam I am fine”
“Are you sure”?
Yes ma'am”, he responded carelessly
“Whatever your problem is, it's better that you share it with people. Don't die in silence”
It was obvious that everything was not going well with Godwin. For the past two weeks, Godwin had been acting strangely and weirdly. Everyone seeing that he was a shadow of himself came to ask him what the problem might be but oftentimes, he would only dismiss that nothing was wrong with him.
Just last week, the proprietor had called the head teacher to his office to ask about Mr Godwin.
“What is wrong with our Geography teacher”? The man asked.
“I don't understand sir” she responded lightly,
“I don't know if I am the only one who noticed that he had not been himself”
“I noticed the same and approached him, but he only said that he was fine” she muttered
“Okay if that's the case no problem, but I hope that he still performs his duty effectively”
“We've not got any complaint from his HOD”
“It's okay”, he said, as he dismissed her.
Madam Koso is the head of the department who lives in the staff quarters. She takes it as a point of duty to ensure that she walks around the school environment after school might have closed. She ensured that all classrooms and offices were properly locked.
“I am not dying in silence ma, just that life has been so unbearable and unfair to me”
Upon hearing that, she took a chair and sat close to him. Among all the administrative staff, Madam Koso has been the one who has been so concerned about the welfare of others. Her motherly dispositions make her stand out from others.
“What is the matter”?
“Ma, I don't think it will make any sense to you”
“Whatever the case may be, just say it, I am all ears. If it's something I can be of help, I promise you I will do my best” she assured.
The statements gave him confidence in her to say his mind.
“There has been this girl whom I have been dating for three years now, I had plans to marry her, I spent a lot of money seeing her through her baking school, just last week she told me that she was getting married to another guy”. He said with tears flowing through his eyes.
“That's so bad”, she muttered, putting her hands on his shoulders, telling him not to cry.
“I've never been heartbroken in life, this is the greatest pain I've ever been through in life”.
“It's painful and I know how heartbreaking it is but let me ask you a question”
“Okay ma”
“Have you ever promised to marry the girl in question”?
Godwin didn't expect that, so he cleaned his face and looked at her.
“I was planning a surprise proposal this week”. He answered.
“If that's the case, you cannot hold her to ransom. The mistake is from you; you didn't make your intentions known to her. Probably, she would have waited for you.”
Godwin was speechless; he admitted his mistakes, and he wouldn't cry further. For the last time, he cleaned his eyes and said “Thank you ma”
“Go back home, get yourself refreshed, forget about the girl and move on with your life, there are other beautiful girls you can get married to. I wish you good luck” she said as she locked the door of the office.
