Marie is a college student and at the same time pursuing her dream to become a dancer. She lives away from her mother since she gained admission into college. She learnt her father left the home when she was still young and she didn't get to know him. At the tender age of 19 she was already studying Business Administration in the college. Her mother does not want her to be a dancer, so, Marie dances freely anytime she feels because she does not want to disappoint her mother. She let go of some opportunities to sign up for a dance academy and travel abroad because of her mother. There seems to be a story behind her mother's refusal to let her dance but she didn't tell her daughter about it.
In the hallway, in the streets, in her room, everywhere Marie finds herself, she dances freely and happily. Everyone knows her to be a dancer, most times, they gather to see her dance moves and hail her. Her best friend, Annie, to only close friend she has, they are always together, she wants to be become a singer and she is studying music in college. The two friends both had visions but one is pursuing hers while the other is holding herself back. When it was time for the holiday, these two friends make trips to another town and spend their holiday enjoying. Another holiday is fast approaching and these two friends already make plans on how they will spent their holiday.
In the Early Morning of March, Maria walks gallantly across her dormitory for her morning class, her eyes catches a glimpse of a poster on the wall; Two weeks intensive training.
"Training for what? She asked herself. Then she continues reading. After reading for a moment, she walks away in silence.
Later in the day, Annie notices her mood and walks up to her to ask what's wrong with her.
"Babe, you've been moody since morning, what's wrong? Annie asked.
"Nothing" Marie replied.
"You know I won't take that from you" Annie replies with a serious face.
"Okay, okay, there's this training for dancers coming up next week in Los Angeles, I would like to go but I'm scared if my mum finds out.
"What happens after the training? Annie asked again.
"I might be lucky and get admitted into their dance academy.
Few days later, Marie decided to go for the training after Annie has convinced her. She signed up for the training online and packes her loads in preparation for the journey. Marie told her mother that she will be going to Los Angeles for a class trip and it will take two weeks.
She successfully traveled down to Los Angeles that day with the other trainees, they were welcomes by a man who claimed to be their master. Days past and Marie is already doing well in the academy. Many hopes has risen for her as many already liked her especially, her master, who promised to sponsor her and make her the best if she decides to join their dance academy.
A week and few days passed and everything seems okay until Marie's mother shows up in the academy. Marie knew the end has come and she should get ready to go home, but then, her mother keeps standing in front of their master, a man in his mid forties. They both gave each other a familiar look and Marie has to move closer to know what's really happening.
"Mum. Do you know Master? She asked quietly.
After a long silence, she
breaks the silence by revealing that he is Marie's father. Marie's father was a dancer like her, he abandoned her and her mother because of his dancing career, he never had time for his family. With a teary eyes, she took her daughter's hand and walked out of the hall leaving no room for Marie to ask a question.
You offer a very interesting twist in this story, @royaldiadem. There is so much explained by the ending. We know now why the mother resists Marie's ambition. We know perhaps why Marie is such a natural dancer. We also know why (perhaps) the 'master' takes an interest in her dancing.
It seems that the ending is left open, but that is not true. The story as it happens up to this point in Marie's life is complete. In the future she may meet her father. She may decided to dance. She may have a serious conversation with her mother. But, the central conflict of the story is resolved. We understand why Marie's mother resists dancing and why Marie loves it.
