Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #54

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction contest!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Honorable Mentions of the Week

@funshee
The Fruits Of Our Labor

It has been four days since our first harvest from the farm, and every afternoon I love to have it as a snack. I'm learning more interesting ways to incorporate it into our diets and who knows what my experiment will bring.

@iskawrites
The choice to love

The carnival was awesomely infused with a rich display of both local and foreign artistic expressions such as dance, instant paintings, and costume displays. They even promised a full-stage play the next day.

Somewhere in the middle of the fun, I excused myself to get a drink. Despite the air being chilly, the body heat from the crowd made me dehydrated. I had just gotten a cold bottle of Coca-Cola when someone bumped into me and the entire bottle went flying. I turned angry eyes and locked them with his own, enlarged in shock.

@wongi
Que Sera Sera

The next day, I got the opportunity to meet Segun. He was a really handsome looking fellow. Really outspoken and very humble for a teenager who had so much money.

I watched as my sister explained to him that she accepted the gift from the previous day but that was the last of it. I don't really know what she said after that but I'm certain that it wasn't something Segun liked hearing.

@kingsleyy
Inkwell's Love

Throughout those days and nights of that week, we exchanged affectionate messages, creating the illusion of romantic involvement while we weren't dating; It's friendship that was the bedrock, with a chemistry stronger than a covalent bond.

Third Place: Wins 2 Hive

Our third place winner is @JJmusa2004, with the story:

Jadesola

Source

One tactic I employed to get close to Jadesola but had little results was constantly borrowing things from her, such as notebooks, biros, pencils, erasers, etc. Another was to send small notes to those we loved, not necessarily as declarations of intent but perhaps to pass on information we did not want others to know about. Nonetheless, I made my decision, "I would write her a love note," which I eventually did, but the outcome was rather unpalatable. I sent a junior student to deliver the small, pieced love note that contained the expression of my undiluted heart feelings for her, savored with promises of commitment and public displays of affection.

Second Place: Wins 3 Hive

Our second place winner is @balikis95, with the story:

My Beloved

Source

However, the most interesting part of this was that she got my beloved home and had it made for me when I got back the next day. And just the smell alone made my head rotate 360 degrees in a flash. It was worth it! Every moment was filled with a blissful adventure.

First Place: Wins 5 Hive

Our first place winner is @marriot5464, with the story:

Love Beyond The Storm

Source

Then the sound of a loud bang on the door added to it. Quickly, I got up and opened the door and it was just like a scene from a romantic movie. Standing on the other side was my dad smiling, drenched to the bone with the golden price, the drugs that will bring relief to my mum in his hands and a soaked umbrella.

This Week's Prompt #54:

Time

The word "time" can take many forms

Timeout, timeless, timetable, timepiece, timekeeper, timeline, timley, times, time-sharing, time-sheet, time-locked, time-lapse, time-worn, time-sensitive.

Ideas:

  • You found a time-worn, dogeared toy from your youth that brought memories flooding back.
  • You lost a valuable timepiece that belonged to your father, because you couldn't resist wearing it to a party. The consequences were dire.
  • You embarked on a time-sensitive project that was dear to your heart only to discover that you'd miscalculated and, now, your future was in jeopardy.
  • An event, meeting, or conversation led you to the realization that there's a time to party and a time to work. Your life has been more balanced ever since.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
