Dona seems determined to become a tax collector but we have no insight into why he wants to do this. The conflict between parents and son is not explored in any detail. In the end, nobody has filled the position of tax collector and Dona is back to where he started - about to study medicine. From the reader's perspective, we have to ask... what was the point? Where did the learning and growth points come in? What was Dona hoping to achieve? How did he feel when the King turned him down?
