There is a saying, "Nothing ventured, nothing gained". If you hadn't written, you never would have known. It was rather rude of her to laugh. That shows she probably didn't deserve your affection. However, though you may be in the brother zone, but you are also in the 'clear' zone: you know where you stand. No more worrying. No more wondering. It's over :)

You express your feelings well in this essay. We can all relate. There surely has been a time for each of us when we admired someone who did not admire us. It looked bad and depressing at that moment but I later realised that it was for my own good...just as you said.

One thing that's very sure is that, the person that rejected us was never meant for us.
