It seems likely from the beginning that he must be dead, but the story artfully takes us through his period of denial, and we go right along with him, even enjoying the benefits of not being visible when he gets to be as close as he wants to Kesha. That is the importance of rich details in a story — that the reader immerses in the tale and in the fictional reality of the main character.
