Stories from the Previous Week

Thank you to who posted a story for last week's prompt: "Blind ambition":

Author Shout-outs

We'd like to call out a few stories that got high marks from our curators this week.

@popurri

The Race of the Eagles

Curator comment:

Excellent story from @popurri. With the exception of a few translation challenges, the story is beautifully written, describing the grueling experience of long-distance runners training for and attempting a summit in freezing elements (and fighting against the pressure of their coach to take drugs to give them an advantage). It is really well shaped and well told.

@wlin

Reflections of the Past

Curator comment:

What a lovely story we have from wlin! In response to the blind ambition prompt the author writes of a homeless man. Description of the man is rich with context. Then we have a father and son. The father and son are driving and see the homeless man in the street. The father explains that the man used to coach a team. His greed was so great that he bet on his team and apparently corrupt players colluded to help the bet work out. The homeless man lost the bet, couldn't pay his debts and was ruined. The corrupt players were banned from playing, forever. The man then tells the son that he was one of those players and there, in the street, he could also have been. The son is moved by the father's honesty and trust in telling of this history. This is a most lovely story, hampered only by a slightly confusing change in perspective from the homeless man to the driver.

@iskawrites

Blind Ambition

Curator comment:

@iskawrites hits all the right notes in her Blind Ambition story. It is very well written, with dialogue, scene description and a strong arc. Also, the author offers clear insight into the protagonist's character and motivation. The story begins with an internal monologue. A young woman is bitter. She is attending the wedding of yet another friend, and yet there the young woman sits, engagement ring on her finger, unmarried. She feels humiliated. She feels everyone is laughing at her. She leaves the church and heads to her affianced offices. There he is consumed with trying to get on the Forbes Under 30 list. She throws her ring at the young man. As the story ends, she describes the young man's aspect: The young man stares in horror at what his blind ambition has done to what seemed a perfect life. It's not clear what the author's message is here, and that's good. We don't have a good and bad, a right and wrong. We have a young woman who is taking her cues from public opinion (she's not married...what are people saying) and yet she faults her boyfriend for taking his cues from the opinion of a magazine. In a way, the two people are very similar. They are both driven by ambition — she, the ambition to be married, he the ambition to get on a list.

Fiction Writing Prompt of the Week

This week's prompt is: "Ah-ha moment."

An "ah ha" is a surprise, a revelation, or a sudden realization about something one had never understood before.

A scientist could have an ah-ha moment when making an interesting observation while performing research in a lab. A woman could have an ah-ha moment about the behaviors of men. A child could have an ah-ha moment when he realizes that in order to get what he wants from his mother, he's going to have to be very well behaved.

Tell us a story about a character who has an ah-ha moment and comes to a sudden realization, makes an exciting discovery, or learns something that has a life-changing effect.

Good luck. Remember, as always, we are looking for the elements of story. These include:

  • Great first lines
  • Good settings
  • Well-developed characters
  • Integration of action, dialogue and narrative
  • A conflict that intrigues the reader
  • A "story arc" which results in the resolution of the conflict and brings the story to a satisfying conclusion
  • And of course, we are looking for well-edited stories that are not littered with typos or grammatical errors — please use the free Grammarly tool for grammar and spelling checks (and not AI writing or rephrasing tools for revising)

You can find more on all of these topics in the catalog of storytelling tips.

If you don't feel inspired by this prompt or the featured image, feel free to peruse any of our past prompts or our collection of idea-generators:

Writing Prompt Guidelines:

  1. See The Ink Well FAQ: Before you post in The Ink Well, we ask that you read our FAQ post to familiarize yourself with our important community rules and guidelines.
  2. Story link: Please be sure to post your story in The Ink Well community, and post a link to your story in a comment on this post.
  3. Hashtags: Please use these hashtags: #fiction #writing #inkwellprompt #theinkwell — as well as #dreemport, if you are also posting your story to the DreemPort site.
  4. Community support: When you post in The Ink Well, please be sure to visit the work of at least two other community members and comment on their work.
  5. Title: The title is up to you. You can come up with any title you wish. You do not need to name it after the prompt. Please do use the prompt word(s) within the story.
  6. Images: Please only use images from license free and creative commons sites, like Pixabay, Unsplash and Pexels. Images you find on the Internet are copyright protected and cannot be used. Be sure to provide all image source links.
  7. Length: We request that story word counts are a maximum of 1,500 words in length and ideally 750-1000 words. This is just a guideline. Longer stories are okay too, but they tend to get fewer readers. Additionally, The Ink Well admins appreciate keeping to that maximum story length for our time management. (Note: We generally consider stories less than 750 words "too short!")
  8. Translations: If you post a story that has been translated from another language, please include both the English version and the translation.

Reminders: Be sure to also read our community rules. As always, please avoid violent, gory, bloody, brutal, sexist or racist themes and language, NSFW (not safe for work) stories like erotica, stories with a political or religious agenda, and stories featuring abuse of any kind. (We have a complete article about The Ink Well stance on violence and brutality for more information.) And do NOT use AI tools to write or manipulate your stories. You must provide your own unique content.
