This weekly magazine highlights a small selection of short stories posted to The Ink Well community that stood out and were awarded a Curie vote.

The most recent case was the clean murder of the CEO of Flashpoint Tech Corporation. The IIA had received intel that the fifty-two-year-old man's life was in danger due to his company's merger. Before Crow and his team could get to the building, the middle-aged man had slumped on his desk. Heart attack. -@kemmyb

They weren't talking. They weren't moving. They weren't even standing close to each other. But they were all facing the same direction, west according to my view, and their faces were fixed upwards as though they could see something in the sky or something that looked catchy. Was it a shooting star? Should I go outside and check what's going on? I thought to myself. -@ubani1

You deal with a religiously sensitive theme in this story, @ubani, but you do so respectfully. Speculation about real or mythical events is legitimately within the scope of fiction. Your development of the story is good.

It is every day, ordinary. That is how you imagine this event might take place. On that ordinary day the extraordinary happens. The protagonist does not expect to be left out of the Rapture, and yet that is exactly what happens. This looked-for event turns out to be a nightmare for him. -@theinkwell

As I got closer, I could see the crowd gathered around, as youths were pouring buckets of water into the raging inferno. Something that seemed to be making no difference at all. The fire fighters were busy pulling out their hoses and setting up their equipment lackadaisically. At the rate it was burning, they would never save the building. -@bruno-kema

Lightning struck in front of the truck before Julie even replied. Kasper heard her scream. His heart was pounding in his chest, his hand on the door handle in preparation to go check on his sister. Before he found the willpower to open the door, the hood of the truck came slamming down, shaking the whole truck. -@riottales

Wow! You can spin a tale. This was so suspenseful, so real. The sense of doom hangs over the truck. Not until the very end can a sigh of relief be exhaled. Great job in writing an entertaining story, and great job in writing to the prompt. -@theinkwell

They pulled up in front of my black corolla and then I saw the door slide open and 3 men in dark masks step out at a fast pace towards me. That's when it clicked and the adrenaline picked up but I was a little too late and they caught up to me before I could make it back to the store.

I like this story, @young-boss-karin. It touches on the theme of reincarnation, using the call of the week, albeit dramatised by the awareness of living in another body. -@gracielaacevedo

Beautiful Life

Mr. Doro continued paddling through his boat to reach the shore. I just then decided to walk beside the shore along the sea. Just walking and walking. I forced myself to smile or to be happy at least. Although walking on the shore alone while smiling is like being crazy. Well, that's how I found myself happy despite my current situation. Enjoy life while I still can. [e-mail]

It gave me something to think about today - a reminder that life is precious and since none of us know how long we will be here, it is important to enjoy each day as if it is our last one. Well done! I really liked Kirk's attitude and acceptance, as well as all of his observations of the people and life around him. -@jayna
