Hello Beautiful Community!

We would like to start off by saying how impressed and proud we are of our community members, and the quality of work appearing here. You make us laugh, cry and shake our heads in wonder. We have seen some startling development of skills and some truly brilliant work!

Thank you for helping to make this a great community.

Okay, onto the news.

New Staff

Please join us in welcoming @gracielaacevedo to The Ink Well moderator team. She has extensive experience and skill to bring to the community, and we are so happy that when we invited her to join our tiny team (@jayna and @agmoore) she agreed!

New Rules

We update our community rules from time to time to ensure that it's very very clear what kinds of content we do and do not accept in The Ink Well.

Our team reads every single story published here and we reward the best work. We also look for any violations of our rules, such as plagiarism or brutality of women, and we take action accordingly.

The rules are freshly updated. Even if you are familiar with them, please read them again.

Rules Support and Protect Our Community

The goals of The Ink Well are to foster creativity and growth, and to help writers earn an income for their work. We want The Ink Well to be a safe and welcoming place for writers and readers.

We operate like any professional publication would from the standpoint of defining the boundaries of what can be published in this domain.

Consider this:

  • The New Yorker would never publish a story depicting a violent rape scene
  • The Atlantic Monthly would never accept plagiarized content or material that had been published elsewhere
  • Harper's Magazine would never publish stories involving stabbings, murders, gore, brutality of children or abuse of pets

Likewise, we do not accept stories with these themes, or content that has been previously published.

For this reason, we ask in every prompt we publish that you read our community rules, which appear on the right side of our home page.

What Happens When Stories Violate The Ink Well Rules

We do take action when stories violate our rules, and even when the content is borderline in some way. Depending on the severity, the actions include:

  • Ignoring the post (no upvotes or comments).
  • A stern warning or a request that you edit the offensive material.
  • Downvotes, for example in the case of plagiarism (which is not allowed in The Ink Well or on Hive).
  • Being reported to Hive Watchers, a group devoted to preventing copyright abuse.
  • Being muted in The Ink Well.

New Manifesto

Please check out The Ink Well Manifesto, if you have never done so. It provides the mission of The Ink Well, information about rewards and income, and more information on our policies.

The manifesto was updated on 5/19/21.

Story Themes, Ideas, Inspiration

Hopefully it is quite clear that we do not make rules to stifle creativity and limit creative expression. If you have a need to write about themes and topics that we do not allow here, please find another venue and audience.

We encourage and support ideas and creativity by publishing a weekly fiction prompt, as well as regular writing tips. Each writing tips article contains a full list of all other tips articles.

Additionally, some of our prompts are designed to provide a nearly inexhaustible list of ideas to spur your writing. And these resources are included in every weekly prompt. Please refer to these two posts:

And there will be more to come!

Community Involvement

You may have noticed that we have been including a reminder in our comments to support other writers in the community. We request in our community rules and in the rules for every writing prompt that when you publish in The Ink Well you also take the time to read and comment on at least two other writers' work.

This mutual support is critical for the health of our community.

And remember that the rewards for Hive posts are split between the writer and the curators! You are paid to read and support other writers, just as you are paid to publish.

Greetings to the followers and writers of this beautiful community.

I am very much at home here, writing and reading, which are my two passions at this stage, alongside @jayna and @agmoore.

It makes me happy to find texts with complete stories, that open a universe in a few words, and it fills me with illusion to think that there are people who take their first steps in writing, I hope to see that magical process of learning to capture the imagination.

It is great having you on the team, @gracielaacevedo!

Thank you very much for this.
And a big congratulations to @gracielaacevedo on joining the team.
And as we progress, we keep moving😁

Thank you for all your contributions to the community, @bruno-kema!

It's my honor😊😇
