Welcome to the new weekly fiction writing prompt from The Ink Well!

But First...

Before we get into the prompt of the week, here are a few answers to recent questions:

  1. What's going on with The Ink Well? Answer: Our leadership is switching up, due to life changes with the previous admins. You can read about it in our announcement post.
  2. Is the Fast and Furious Festival continuing? Answer: We are launching a new weekly prompt initiative, but you are welcome to write for the festival posts.
  3. What is the plan for The Ink Well going forward? Answer: Our mission is simple: inspire our community members to write fiction and improve their skills, and encourage engagement and community support among members.

We will be posting weekly prompts and continue to add to our library of writing tips. It's going to be pretty low-key from the standpoint of programming and administration. (We will also be curating, so be sure to put your best food forward!)

This Week's Prompt

Each week will provide a picture, as well as words and ideas to inspire your writing.

You know what February is, right? February is all about heart! So this month, let's think about matters of the heart - of love found and love lost.

Your prompt of the week is the featured image in this post, and the words "heart and soul." We hope these will inspire your creativity!

Remember the important elements of good fiction:

  • A good setting
  • Character development
  • Conflict
  • Dialog
  • A story arc and resolution

Weekly Prompt Rules:

  1. You have a week to write for the prompt, until the next one is posted. (Note: You can write for any of the prompts anytime. This is just a guideline to be included in the weekly round-up of highlights.)
  2. Please use these hashtags: #fiction #writing #inkwellprompt #theinkwell
  3. Post a link to your story in a comment on this post.
  4. Visit the work of at least two other community members and comment on their work.

Note: Be sure to also read our community rules.

Have fun!

Does the 1K word count maximum apply going forward to both the FF&F and the weekly prompts?

Oh, it's not a word limit at all, @justclickindiva. It's just a suggestion to make sure that our community members feel the stories are accessible, and readable online. If your stories go longer, it is absolutely fine. Thank you for asking!

Here's my submission for this week's prompt. The Rafter in the Stream.

Thank you for submitting a story for this week's prompt!

Interesting story. Harmony of opposites. I left you a comment.

I just discovered this community and I already feel at home here. I can't wait to read people's works and get lost in the myriad of creativity. How wonderful.

One question though - is fan-fiction allowed? I write a lot of action and esoteric horror set within the Warhammer 40k universe, just wondering if that's okay. Of course nothing is plagiarized

Welcome, @johneyreacko. Fan fiction is okay, as long as it complies with the community rules. We don't accept anything depicting violence against women. We may also augment the rules to ensure that there is no excessive gore or violence. There are, of course, places for that. Above all, we want our community to be welcoming to writers of many genres, and extremes can be offensive to some. Hopefully that helps!

Ohhh! how nice a challenge hehehehehe, I'll sign up.
