Winner Announcement and Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #77

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Highlighting @nancybriti1, with the story:

Paying with the same currency

I looked at my naked body in front of the mirror. Despite a few extra pounds, I was still the same girl I had always been. My waist, my hips, my thighs remained toned, firm. My face also retained the beauty and the mischievousness of before, the one that my friends had sincerely praised. Then, in front of the mirror, I asked myself the question I had been asking myself every day for months: Why had he betrayed me?

Curator's comment :

@nancybriti1 writes a well thought out and psychologically correct story for CNF. It tells of the experience of being tempted to respond to a love triition with the same kind of treatment. Her language is precise and insinuating, full of elements of life in the tropics. The thoughts flow very naturally. The denouement is exceptional and provokes identification with the narrator. Recommended reading.

Highlighting @deraaa, with the story:

A Tale: Madam Koi Koi

Thoughts of how I would get through the day plagued my mind. I was the first into the dorm. The flaking navy blue paint irked me for some reason, throw in the lack of proper sunlight and you had the perfect recipe for raising my hackles and anxiety. I took a deep breath and chose the bunk at the far corner of the room, much closer to the window. I hate heights so… I took the one closest to the ground.

Curator's comment :

@deraaa writes a CNF in which she recalls the terrifying experience that led her to believe in the existence of a demon called Madam Koi Koi, a mysterious woman who prowled around wearing a single red shoe. The experience happened in a youth camp and since then she has no doubt about some of the myths. A well-told story that spreads the tension.

Highlighting @zyzymena, with the story:

Breaking Point

That's how a new friendship blossomed, and soon Stanley became my personal chauffeur, driving me to the lesson center and back every day. After a month, he asked me to be his girlfriend. Despite discovering he was 15 years older than me, I accepted, largely influenced by his consistent spoiling and the special treatment he had been showering me with during the past month.

Winner

Winner for this month @marriot5464, with the story:

My New Neighbour

I swallowed hard, struggling to find the right words. "Sorry Janet, I wish I could but the thing is, my girlfriend's actually using the power bank to charge her phone. I don't want to disturb her," I lied knowing fully well I was home alone, heart pounding with guilt.

Curator's comment :

The story is very well written, with excellent dialogue, pacing, and a great story arc.

This Week's Prompt 77:

"Water under the bridge"

The Merriam Webster Dictionary
: used to say that something that happened in the past and is no longer important or worth arguing about.

  • We had our differences in the past, but that's all water under the bridge now.
  • Perhaps a harrowing experience made you realise that mistakes you'd made in the past did not define your future.
  • Maybe your eventual success made you realise that the challenges you'd overcome were just water under the bridge.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
